Greendale Elementary School Receives National Award
Greendale Elementary has been named a 2024 National ESEA Distinguished School. This prestigious honor, awarded to only two schools per state each year, celebrates our outstanding effots and the incredible progress of our students. This tremendous honor is due to the efforts of our gifted staff and exceptional students.
The Promise Program
Visitors from Wellspring Foundation and Virginia Highlands Community College visited GES to share the details of the Promise Program with students. Funded by Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia, the Promise Program is an amazing opportunity for students who live in Washington County, VA to attend Virginia Highlands Community College for free. This generous scholarship is available for the Class of 2025 through 2037 and is designed to make college and workforce training more accessible and affordable, covering tuition, fees, and books. Whether you are attending public school, private school, or are homeschooled, if you live in Washington County for at least 12 months prior to graduation and are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you can qualify!
Students were given a SWAG bag to take home with information about the program. A teacher representative from each grade level played musical chairs for a chance to win a pizza party for their grade level. Congratulations to Mrs. Bailey and the 3rd grade for winning the pizza party!
Students Victorious Over Faculty and Staff
The annual flag football game between fifth grade students and GES faculty and staff was held on November 4. Students squeezed out a victory by one touchdown as the pep band played and spirit squad cheered.
PTO Bingo
PTO held a bingo fundraising event. Examples of some prizes included several themed gift baskets, and gift cards and SWAG from local businesses. While 82 adults played bingo, children were treated to popcorn and a movie by Communities in Schools. The event raised $1753.00 for PTO.
Veterans Honored
On November 11, Greendale Elementary hosted several local veterans for a special program of recognition. As veterans arrived, they were served refreshments of coffee and pastries. Then the representatives of each branch of the military were escorted into the gymnasium while students cheered their arrival. Students shared directions for proper flag etiquette, the history of Veterans Day, and several poems. The entire student body sang "We Honor You" by John Jacobson. Veterans then had the opportunity to visit and have photographs taken with their family members who are students and teachers.
Second and Third Grade Students Present a Series of Folk Dances
On Thursday, November 14, Greendale second and third grade students presented a program of folk dances from around the world. The presentation opened with the Heel-Toe Polka. Then the second graders demonstrated the Sasha and the Chimes of Dunkirk. Third grade presented Los Machetes and t'Smidge. The evening culminated with students inviting guests onto the floor to do an American folk dance to the music "Old Brass Wagon." The circle dance featured steps such as swing your partner, do-si-do, and promenade.
Thanksgiving Meal
This year we had many family members join their students for our annual Thanksgiving Meal. Thank you to our wonderful cafeteria staff for providing a delicious meal of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, a roll, and choice of pumkin pie or pudding.
Fifth Grade Visits Washington County Career and Technical Center
Our 5th grade students visited the Washington County Career & Technical Education Center on November 8th. We toured the school and learned about many different careers. They heard from several students and staff about the programs that are offered. Our 5th graders left very excited about their future opportunities for learning!
