Season of Light Greetings Shaw Montessori!
What amazing events celebrating the work and love of our student musicians, our student artists, and our student athletes this week! Immense appreciation goes out to our special area teachers for their work! Ms. Allison for the Rock Art Installation that greeted you as you entered campus, Mr. Pozo for the audacious effort in getting all of our students prepared to share their musical learning with you and to Coach Wilfert for his work with our mighty Soccer Stars….two exciting games this week!
WOW Davian Gonzales-Montgomery! Davian, an 8th grader at Shaw had the opportunity to film the last charette of our Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gonzales for Reimagine Phoenix. Congratulations Davian, your work is inspiring! (link to video coming soon)
There are just a few short weeks to get those tax credit donations in. Remember, you may donate in the school office or online at: https://www.phxschools.org/tax-credit Thank you!
This week the students will be working with volunteers to plant 22 new trees on our campus. These trees are brought to us by a generous grant project aimed at bringing shade and cooling things down in the urban core by The Arizona Sustainability Alliance.
Friday, December 13th is the last day of afterschool classes.
Our spring classes are here: Spring2025 What a great stocking stuffer for a Shaw student!
Last week, our Governing Board approved the installation of new playgrounds at Shaw! We believe that construction will begin early spring. This project will replace both of our current playgrounds, updating them with structures that encourage motor refinement and skill development as well as spaces that are attractive, updated and encourage fun with friends. If you have the opportunity, the renderings are on display in the school cafeteria. I will keep you posted on construction start dates, construction duration and our plan to provide alternative spaces of activity as we watch our playground emerge from paper to reality.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Holiday Concert Art Installation
Students in 1-2-3 learned about the artist Hilma af Klint and painted rocks with organic shapes in pastel colors to represent her style. In 4-5-6, students learned about the artist Shantell Martin and painted black and white rocks in her free-flowing style. That was the start; the next was coming up with installation ideas to display their rocks. Students brainstormed and came up with “Peace Walk” and “Cloud of Wishes” as ways for you to experience their creations. Hope you enjoyed it!
There are still some holiday cards left!
Each bundle has 4 cards for only $5. Cards can be purchased from the front office (CASH ONLY)

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
Our third week with basil and we ran into a bump in the road. When we pulled our bottle gourds the white flies took residency in our basil plants. They have been sucking the life out of the basil since the beginning of break, rendering half of our plants yellow and sickly. What to do in such an event? After consulting with Principal Engdall, we decided to pull out the pizza oven and make margarita pizzas. This, of course, has been a blast. We have even used other toppings from our garden, including, sweet peppers and kale. Check out what the students have been baking!
Recently some of the middle school students brought figurines to school. They are colloquially known as “dolls”; however, the students insist they are “collectable figurines” (making this mischaracterization could land you in hot water). Whatever you choose to call them, they sure had a busy week traipsing around campus. They even made an appearance in the garden. Watch out for Lyle the Crocodile little ones!
Thank you to all the parents that volunteered in the garden for the holiday concert after-parties. They helped make hot chocolate, supervised the fire, and cleaned up after the festivities. Linda, Rick, Ron, Nicole, Nick, and Lenny, ya’ll are gems!
Also, shout out to our middle schooler, Davian, for directing, filming, and editing Dr. Gonzalez’s Reimagine video this week! They were on-location in the garden where we were please to host them. Nice job Davian!
The following volunteer date is on the calendar:
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email (insects included). Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!
