Help Promote a Positive School Experience: Complete the Climate/Culture Survey
PLEASE COMPLETE THE FAMILY SURVEY NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 30.
The MRH School District asks ALL FAMILIES to take part in our twice-yearly School Climate and Culture Survey created by the University of Missouri and the National PBIS Center. The current DESE accreditation standards require that districts conduct such surveys with all parents/guardians, staff members, and students in grades 3-12. These surveys are designed to give us the information we need to promote a positive school experience for all.
In the fall, we had 398 respondents. We are hoping for 400+ families to participate in the spring survey. Responses are anonymous. MRH staff will use this data to develop overall improvement efforts. We are incorporating the survey data from staff, students, and families into building and District climate goals.
If you have more than one child in school, you have two options:
Complete one survey for the entire family, OR
Complete one survey for each student if their experiences in their respective schools vary significantly
Students in grades 3-12 will be taking the surveys during school class time.
If you would like more information about the Student Climate & Culture Survey or choose for your child to not participate, please contact Vince Estrada: vince.estrada@mrhschools.net
Field of Candidates Narrowed to Two for Unexpired Term on Board of Education
The Board of Education on May 1 deferred its decision to select a 7th member to fill the final year of an unexpired term. Nine individuals filed applications to be named to the seat formerly occupied by Christy Martinez, who tendered her resignation in March. At Thursday's special meeting, applicants addressed the Board for three minutes, explaining their experiences and qualifications to serve the District. Board members ultimately selected two candidates and agreed to continue deliberations. A selection will be made at a subsequent meeting.
The two finalists are Loretta Colvin and Demetrius Easley. Colvin and Easley are parents of MRH students.
Competency-Based Education: What It Means at MRH
The final installment of the Community Conversations series for the 2024-2025 school year featured a hands-on, interactive workshop for parents, aimed at enhancing their understanding of Competency-Based Education (CBE). MRH Student Teacher Receives Surprise Award
Saint Louis University senior Aurora Hofius has been named a 2025 Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow, a statewide honor that recognizes aspiring educators who exemplify leadership, passion, and commitment to the teaching profession. The award, presented by the Missouri Milliken Educators in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, celebrates just 13 teacher candidates from across the state who demonstrate the values and practices that define effective, future-ready educators.
Hofius, a Secondary English Education major, is currently completing her student teaching at
Maplewood Richmond Heights High School where she assists English teacher Derek Rowley. She was nominated by faculty in SLU’s School of Education, who praised her dedication to student learning, collaborative spirit, and thoughtful approach to classroom practice.
“Aurora stands out as both a reflective practitioner and a collaborative teammate,” said Dr. Benton M. Brown, assistant dean in the School of Education. “She brings warmth, professionalism, and a deep commitment to equity and inclusion into every learning environment. Her students and colleagues are better for it.”
Hofius has also been actively involved in professional learning communities during her time at
SLU, contributing to school improvement projects and demonstrating a clear vision for her role
as a teacher-leader.
“I’m honored and humbled to be selected,” Hofius said. “This recognition affirms my commitment to helping students thrive—and I’m excited to grow alongside them as a teacher
and learner.”
Samantha Miller Receives SSD Rosemary Zander Award

Her positive attitude, dedication, and willingness to learn make her a valued member of every team she joins."
- Angela Schroeder, SSD Teacher, Maplewood Richmond Heights High School
Since 1988, students have been recognized for this award due to their accomplishments in academics, arts, athletics, communications, vocational training, employment, independent living skills, community service, and extracurricular activities. Recipients are chosen by a panel of SSD judges who carefully review and score the many nominations submitted each year, pouring over the heartfelt and thoughtful words of SSD staff who clearly think the world of their students.

Host an International Exchange Student
Hosting an exchange student gives families a chance to connect with a teen who represents the very best of their country’s young people and culture. Welcoming a student to your home not only adds to the enrichment of your family’s knowledge and appreciation, but is an opportunity to share our culture with students destined for leadership in their home countries.
For decades, American Councils’ exchange students have shared meals, holidays, and laughter with host families. These students spend an academic year at local high schools, eagerly sharing their cultures, contributing to their new communities, and joining school activities.
If you are considering hosting or would like to refer a family any time, contact American Councils for more information. Or CLICK HERE to reach out to a family currently hosting a student.
