Principal's perspective
Dear Mountain Vista Families,
Happy November! It is a great day to be a RAM!
Thank you, families, for attending parent-teacher conferences. Your support and attendance are valued. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns you have about your child’s learning. This can be done through email, reaching out by phone, or making an appointment with the teacher to have additional conferences as needed.
On November 7th from 5-7, we will hold our first family night of the school year, Multicultural Night! We will have dancers, literacy stations, food trucks and so much more! Hope to see you!
The month of October brought cooler temperatures. If it is not raining, snowing, or the temperature doesn’t feel like it’s at 30 degrees or below, students will be going out for recess. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.
Just a reminder that we will have Fall break from November 25-November 29. We hope that you enjoy time with family and friends.
If your child is going to be absent, please submit the absence via the following link, https://tinyurl.com/AttendanceMVCS.
As always, our administrative team is here to serve our students and families. Should you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out via phone (719)527-3400, email, or via the school’s Facebook page via messenger. Go RAMS!
Thank you for your continued support!
Respectfully,
Dr. Angela Valdez (Principal), avaldez@hsd2.org (Hablo español!)
Estimadas familias de Mountain Vista:
¡Feliz noviembre!
¡Vamos RAMS!
¡Gracias por su apoyo!
Atentamente,
Dra. Angela Valdez (Directora), avaldez@hsd2.org (¡Hablo español!)
Our busy classrooms
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been working hard learning about flat and solid shapes, letter sounds and names, as well as improving fine motor skills through writing, cutting and glueing activities. We even incorporated some fun Halloween activities to align with the math and ELA curriculum!
2nd grade
Junior Achievement spent the day in our second-grade classrooms recently, teaching students about some of the jobs people do in communities. They also shared how money works and flows through our own community. Students participated in hands-on activities and had a great day overall!
4th grade
In ELA we just finished our first novel, Wolf. We will start a mythology unit this month and will continue to work on essay writing. In math, we are working on division. Students are also practicing using mathematical vocabulary when explaining how to solve problems. You can support your child by reading 20 minutes a day, practicing math facts, and making sure they are at school on time ready to learn.
6th grade
6th Social Studies
This month in Social Studies, we will continue studying the history of the Mayan Civilization in Mesoamerica. This will lead us to learning about the Aztecs in Mexico, followed by the Inca in South America. Please feel free to ask your child what they learned about each culture to make connections over the topic. Discussing what they learned helps kids remember the content and they normally enjoy sharing their new knowledge. There will also be some cultural lessons over Halloween, Dia De Los Muertos, Thanksgiving, and other winter holidays.
In 6th grade ELA, students are diving into the historical fiction novel A Long Walk to Water, exploring the rich history of South Sudan. They are using their critical thinking skills by applying, connecting, inferring, and analyzing various elements of the text. This unit not only fosters a deeper understanding of the story's themes but also builds empathy and awareness of global issues. We’re excited to share that our next reading will take us to the tragic tale of Titanic survivors.
In math, students have been working with expressions. There are many skills necessary to be successful with expressions. Students start off with learning about exponents and using the order of operations. They will then move on to writing expressions for word problems in topic B. Topic C focuses on finding equivalent expressions with students demonstrating that they understand expressions like 3(a+4) is equivalent to expressions like 3a+12. Finally, students end this module learning how to graph inequalities and solve for unknown variables.
In science, students are finishing up our unit on metabolism. We will take our test and move on to our genetics unit at the start of November. Students created models of cells at the beginning of the year. Students will continue making connections about cells by investigating how ribosomes use proteins to make our body’s traits. We will use a simulation about spiders to observe and manipulate traits like eye color, hair color, etc.
8th grade
Art and Choir
In art K-1 are making rain sticks and will be performing a song on multicultural night! This is a collaboration between art and music!
Students have been working to prepare for their Multi-Cultural Literacy Night performance. Elementary music students who are in Ms. Hughes class have been working on a combined piece called "Rain Dance" that they are invited to sing with the choir. Kindergartners and first graders have created a rain stick to accompany the song.
Choir and band will perform for the Veteran's Day Brunch on November 12th, and the band/choir winter concert is on December 12th at 6pm.
