Cougar Chronicle

Principal's Message
It was great seeing parents and caregivers at our Meet the Teacher night last Tuesday. Also, it was our first school council meeting of the year. If you were unable to attend and would like to moving forward, the dates are posted on our website. Understanding and embracing our parents and caregivers as a major stakeholder, some of the work we will be doing this year is revisiting our school goals and adjusting them based on the input from you. We had a good first discussion at the school council last week and we look forward to the year and ongoing feedback.
Last Friday, we ran a fire drill that was well executed. I did let our students know how impressed we were in their attention to detail and in following directions from staff. A great example of Cougar Pride! September is the month where we run drills so we are prepared should an emergent situation arise. This Friday is also our bus evacuation drill at 9:00 a.m. that lasts no longer than 15 minutes.
This week also leads us to our annual Cougar Run/Walk on Wednesday. As a school community, we understand how important Terry Fox is to the fabric of the country. This is an opportunity for our Sherwood Heights community to do our part in keeping his legacy alive. It has become a tradition at our school for some time now and when we look at the words that we stand by at Sherwood Heights, including respect, responsibility, empathy, compassion, and courage, Terry Fox checked all these boxes through his words, but, more importantly, his action. We also understand that this Friday can be tough on our kids as cancer affects many and our students know of a loved one that has gone through this journey. Hence, as we try to do at Heights, day in and out, we will look out for one another and support each other during what could be emotional for some.
We have modified morning classes on Wednesday. Please see our website for specifics. Furthermore, we will be having a school wide barbecue following the walk/run. The weather looks to be great, and this is a great opportunity for our school to come together for an amazing cause.
The office will be accepting Toonies for Terry all this week. We will also have a donation bin for Toonies on the day of the Cougar Run, Wednesday, September 25.
This Friday we will also be observing Orange Shirt Day and to commit to the ongoing process of truth and reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day is a day of remembrance and an act of reconciliation. It is an opportunity for First Nations, Métis and Inuit; local governments; schools; and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Just a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, September 30, as it is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
In closing and as always, do let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
