We strongly encourage all parents to schedule a conference and attend, as your involvement is crucial to your child’s success. Leader in Me Habit 3: Put First Things First
Leader in Me Habit 3: Put First Things First is all about setting priorities and managing our time wisely. For our students, this habit means focusing on the most important tasks—like learning and growing—before moving on to other activities. It teaches them to plan ahead, stay organized, and make thoughtful choices about how they use their time, which helps them balance responsibilities and personal goals. We encourage students to apply this habit not just in the classroom but also at home, to build a strong foundation for success now and in the future.
Parents can support their child’s understanding of Habit 3: Put First Things First by modeling and practicing prioritization and time management at home. Here are some ideas:
Set Goals Together: Help your child set a weekly goal, like completing homework on time or reading for 15 minutes each night. Discuss why this goal is important and how it helps them “put first things first.”
Create a Schedule: Work with your child to create a daily or weekly schedule that balances schoolwork, chores, and playtime. Teach them to prioritize tasks, starting with the most important ones.
Use a To-Do List: Encourage your child to keep a simple list of things they need to accomplish each day. Cross off items together as they complete them to reinforce the habit of managing their responsibilities.
Discuss Choices and Consequences: Talk about how choosing to read every night and to work on class projects or unfinish classwork first allows for more relaxed playtime later. This helps children understand how prioritizing can reduce stress and lead to better results.
Model Time Management: Share examples of how you manage your own time and prioritize tasks. Kids learn a lot by watching adults, so showing them how you put important things first is a powerful lesson.
These simple activities can help children build good habits that set them up for success both in school and beyond.
How to Volunteer or Join the PTA
Attendance at School =Success
- 95% Attendance Goal: Consistent attendance is crucial for elementary-age children because it ensures they receive the full benefits of classroom learning, social interactions, and essential academic routines. Regular attendance helps students build a strong foundation in their studies, develop good habits, and stay on track with their peers. This year, our school has set a goal for all students to achieve at least 95% attendance to earn the H.E.R.O. (Here, Every day, Ready, On time) award, recognizing their commitment to being present and engaged in their education.
- Independent Study is Available: If you have a know extended absence of more that 3 days, you can ask for Independent Study Packets that your student can complete for academic and attendance credit. You must give a minimum of SEVEN days notice to the office and teacher for a packet to be created, but FOURTEEN (14) days is preferred. If the student completes and turns in the packet the absences will not count against your child.
- Attendance Challenge - If we can have an overall attendance at the end of the school year of at least 95%, then the students will be able to duct tape Mr. Peel to a wall and throw cream pies in his face. Last year we grew from 92% to 93.7% attendance - which was fantastic, but Mission Meadows still had the third lowest overall attendance of all Vista USD elementary school. Let's reach our goal this year Mustangs.
