E-Cigarette Use Among Youth
September 2024
In 2024, youth e-cigarette use dropped to the lowest level in a decade, and youth nicotine pouch use remained low. However, 1.63 million U.S. middle and high school students currently use e-cigarettes and 480,000 use nicotine pouches.
Overview From 2024 Youth Survey
- In the United States, youth use e-cigarettes, or vapes, more than any other tobacco product.1
- No tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are safe, especially for children, teens, and young adults.2
- Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Nicotine can harm the parts of an adolescent's brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.
- E-cigarette marketing, the availability of flavored products, social influences, and the effects of nicotine can influence youth to start or continue vaping.34
- Most middle and high school students who vape want to quit.5
- Many people have an important role in protecting youth from vaping including parents and caregivers, educators and school administrators, health care providers, and community partners.
- States and local communities can implement evidence-based policies, programs, and services to reduce youth vaping.

The program takes a holistic approach with each session using different interactive learning strategies based on Social Cognitive Theory of behavior change that can then be applied and practiced in everyday life and encourages a voluntary change for youth ages 14 to 19.
This is a 10 session program which include the following sessions.

My name is Jill Hutcheson, and I am a Physical Education and Health Teacher at the middle school. Along with teaching I coach 7th Volleyball, 7th Grade Boys Basketball, 8th Grade Girls Basketball and Middle School Track. I am also the Student Council Advisor at the middle school. I'm also the Tobacco Prevention Specialist for the District. As a teacher, I hear a lot of rumblings about vaping and tobacco use, and one of the biggest reasons it was on the rise is because of the lack of information that is out there for our youth. As a community we need to take a stand and help education each other so we are well informed of consequences linked to tobacco use. I am here to answer questions or sit down and talk with you. If I don't know the answer I will do my best to try to find out the information. We, as a community, need to take a stand before it's to late. I am so excited to be able to share any information with the community that I run across.
