A note from Principal Mate
Park View families,
It has been a fantastic first week! I love having the building full of energy again. Students have learned a lot about their classmates, their new grade level, and our Park View routines.
Part of learning routines include necessary practice drills. This afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m., our students participated in a practice fire drill. The students practiced evacuating the building and knowing what to do if the fire alarm goes off. We concluded the drill at about 2:15 p.m. and classes resumed as normal.
These drills are an important part of our school’s most important job: keeping your children safe. They can also be an opportunity to have a conversation at home about school safety and staying calm during an emergency. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
We are looking forward to a great full week next week. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
~Mrs. Mate
MAP testing: August 26 - September 13
Starting August 26 through September 13, students in grades 1-5 will begin taking the Measure of Academic Progress tests, more commonly known as “MAP” tests. While these tests have no impact on your student’s grades, they are critical for measuring their progress in reading and math.
Students in grades 1-5 take MAP tests in the fall, winter, and in the spring, and kindergarten winter and spring. This testing helps measure progress during the school year, identify academic areas that need more attention, and inform instructional adjustments.
The data generated from this year’s MAP tests will help teachers identify which skills each student needs to work on. Teachers will use this data to shape instruction for the school year.
There is nothing your student needs to study or prepare for the test. Your child's teacher will communicate which day during the window they will take the math and reading test. The most
important thing that you can do to support your child is make sure they get good rest
the night before and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning.
You can learn more about the MAP tests at www.ccsd89.org/maptest
Curriculum Night: September 6
We are excited to announce that Curriculum Night will take place on September 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This year, we are trying a new open house format, allowing parents and students to attend at any time during the event.
Teachers will have curriculum information available in their classrooms for you to review and ask questions if necessary. This will also be a wonderful opportunity for students to show their parents around the classroom and connect with friends and families. We hope this new format will encourage more families to attend while accommodating busy schedules. While this is an open house style format, we continue to ask parents to refrain from conferencing with the teacher about student needs or performance. Staff can be reached via email or phone call with any of these concerns. We also have parent teacher conferences on October 11 for these individual needs.
Snack
Students will have an opportunity for snack built in to their morning or afternoon, depending on their lunchtime. For snack, students are able to bring in cut up fruit, vegetables, or a cheese stick. Child-friendly, non-spill water bottles are highly encouraged for drinks throughout the day.
Smartwatches/phones should not be on at school
Reminder: students are not permitted to receive messages on smartwatches or phones during the school day. These messages disrupt the learning environment for your child, their classmates, and the teacher. Parents are encouraged to adjust controls to limit these features during the school day. If you need to reach your child during the day, please contact the main office.
Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must be kept out of sight in a backpack, purse, or locker during the school day. Any student who is using their watch/phone to send/receive calls or messages during the school day will be asked to keep their watch in their backpack.
Please have a conversation at home about the appropriate use of technology at school and why it is important that students are able to focus on their learning.
More information is available on page 42 of the Student/Parent Handbook, CCSD 89 Board of Education Policy 7:192 – Student Use of Mobile Telecommunication Devices, and Board Regulation 7:192-R.
Remind your child to treat district technology devices with care
Families should have a conversation at home about the importance of appropriately using the district's technology devices. Appropriate use includes: carrying the device carefully, keeping liquids away from devices, and not leaving devices in areas with extreme heat or cold. The district will charge families for replacement or repair of district technology devices. The full list of costs is available here: www.ccsd89.org/techdamage
CCSD 89 families that need support for iPad or Chromebook issues should use the district’s online help system. Enter your contact information and some details about the problem at: https://bit.ly/89techsupport
Please turn in a Handbook Acknowledgement form for each child
The CCSD 89 Student-Parent Handbook is available online at www.ccsd89.org/handbook All families must return the Handbook Acknowledgement Form, indicating you have reviewed the 2024-25 Handbook. If you need a form, you can print one here: https://bit.ly/46WMTql
If you have more than one student in the district, you must return a form for each student.
The Technology Acceptable Use guardian form was signed during registration. You can view the student presentations here: www.ccsd89.org/acceptableuse

Labeling items brought to school
Articles of clothing, boots, tennis shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes should be marked with the child’s name and grade or room number so they may be returned if lost. A lost-and-found box is located at each school. Found articles should be brought in immediately and children should check this box as soon as they lose an item. Parents are encouraged to occasionally go through the lost-and-found.
Families can find menus, nutrition info online
