An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden🏈
This week at West we also recognized our most amazing and caring West counselors during National School Counseling Week. Mrs. Zielinski (Grade 6), Mr. Specht (Grade 7), and Mr. Montgomery (Grade 8) work tirelessly to connect with, support, and guide our wonderful West students along many different paths of success. On behalf of our entire West staff I want to thank them for their continued support of all of our West students.
Next week will be Random Acts of Kindness Week at West. Thank you to our incredible West Home & School for organizing what looks like a great week of fun, spirit, and prizes. The work to create a kinder world never ends. There is no limit on the amount of goodness we can put into our school, our community, and the world. To learn more about Random Acts of Kindness Week go to randomactsofkindness.org as well as see below.

Gifted Trip to PVHS
On Wednesday, February 8th, students in 8th grade gifted classes from Middle School West and Middle School East met in the PV High School Media Center with a panel of high school gifted students who shared their experiences transitioning to the high school. A couple topics discuss during the trip were "Know yourself and what you need to maintain a balanced, healthy and happy life, and "create your schedule accordingly, the importance of time management in successfully balancing extracurricular activities and academics."
Mitosis and Cancer
Students in Ms. Emers' seventh grade science classes took on the role of cancer scientists and solved puzzles in a mitosis escape experience! Mitosis is a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth. Cancer begins when a cell undergoes uncontrolled mitosis, so students were able to connect this real world problem with learning about the cell cycle.
Human Body Systems
An understanding of the body can benefit our own health as we go through life. Familiarity with the human body can help us make healthful choices and prompt us to take appropriate action when signs of illness arise. Students in Mr. Weygand and Mrs. Burg's eighth grade health classes explored the many systems that make up our bodies this week. Working in groups, they researched the anatomy, function and diseases of a system then created a life sized diagram that they will share with their classmates.

Random Acts of Kindness Week @ West
- Acts of kindness can produce oxytocin and therefore kindness can be said to be cardioprotective.
- Random acts of kindness has the effect of making you feel loved and emotionally stable when you are frequently kind to others.
- Kindness is good for the heart as it reduces levels of free radicals and inflammation in the cardiovascular system and so slows ageing at source.
- People who performed more acts of kindness throughout the day were less likely to report negative emotions. They were also able to maintain their positive emotions.
We will be putting these facts into practice next week during Random Acts of Kindness Week @ West. Students will be informed, encouraged, enjoy a Spirit Week (see below), engage in activities, have the opportunity to win prizes, and hopefully spread kindness here at West and beyond in order to create a welcoming school environment for all to enjoy. To promote the week all students watched the video below on PVTV this morning. THANK YOU to West Home & School for organizing the week.
