Sound and Light!
The first grade Science Experiences kicked off this week, starting with Willamette Elementary. Students had fun at the Evergreen Space Museum learning about light and sound energy in various hands-on activities. Check out more photos on the MSD Facebook page.
Thank you to the McMinnville Education Foundation for making these experiences possible!
Update Emergency Contacts
Has your family moved or do any of your emergency contacts have new phone numbers? Please keep your contact information up to date by calling your student(s) school(s) when information changes so we can reach you if necessary.
Mark Your Calendars!
There is no school on Monday, Jan. 20 in honor of the Martin Luther Day holiday and no school on Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 27-28 for staff in-service and grading days.
Paper Gardens Writing Competition
The annual Paper Gardens contest is now open for entries. Students can submit fiction/nonfiction prose and poetry in categories separated by age group.
Student entries are free and can be submitted online. Find submission guidelines and more here.
Internship Opportunity
McMinnville Community Media is looking for its next cohort of high school students interested in broadcast video production. Production interns gain skills and experience in live broadcasting under the guidance of industry professionals.
The 2024 cohort -- which included, among others, MHS seniors (pictured from left) Henry Anderson, Rylan Keith and Alyssa Bristow -- helped with field production of the Santa Parade, MHS Basketball games, Juneteenth Celebration, the Air Show and more. Find more details here and apply here.
Upcoming Community Dinner Event
If your New Year’s resolution is to become more involved in the community, consider joining the McMinnville Education Foundation at its second annual “Schools: A Work of Heart” event. Scheduled for February 8, 2025, the four-course wine-pairing dinner and auction is presented by the McMinnville Education Foundation and all proceeds benefit students in our district! Details here.
Robotics for Elementary
If you have a 4th or 5th grade student who loved the 3rd grade robotics program, they might like to attend the coding/robotics camp tomorrow at Mac High. Find out here what you need to know.
Too Sick for School?
It’s important for students to attend school, but with the cold and flu season here, how do you know when to keep your child home? Here is an updated chart of illness symptoms with guidance on when students can return to school.
What’s for Snack?
Next week, elementary students will have a chance to try micro-greens, kumquats, lemonade apples and more during their Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program snack time. Ask them what they snacked on this week!
No-School Day Activities
If you are looking to keep your elementary students occupied on the Jan. 27-28 no-school days, the Evergreen Museum is offering day camps on that Monday-Tuesday. Find more info under the Peachjar button on your school website.
Adaptive PE and Swimming
If you have a student with a developmental, physical or neurodivergent disability or one who just needs a more adaptive/inclusive environment, you might want to explore the programs offered through McMinnville Parks and Rec department. Check your school’s Peachjar button for the January schedule and find more info here.
Dream It, Be It for Girls
The McMinnville chapter of Soroptimists is hosting a career support event for teen girls on Friday, Jan. 17 from 4:30 - 10 p.m. The event is part of an international effort to provide girls with guidance, training and resources that will prepare them for future career success.
The event, held at the First Presbyterian Church (390 NE 2nd Street in Mac), is free and includes a pizza dinner and more. MSD students from Lafayette welcome! Find more info and register here.
Free Training on Handling Problematic Behaviors
Dealing with challenging behaviors from your child (or teen) can be difficult for any parent. Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) is used in MSD classrooms and can be helpful when also used at home. Parents can learn how to use CPS in a free, eight-week online training series offered through the Riverview Center for Growth and funded by the Oregon Health Authority.
New sessions are starting now. Click for more information and upcoming training dates.
