FCS Class
Family and Consumer Sciences
Quarter 2
How is it the middle of Quarter 2 already? Before I share our class activities, I need to ask for a donation: We need paper grocery bags for making caramel corn. If you have any extra at home, send them with your student by Dec 12. Thank you!
We have been busy in class! During Quarter 2 we have focused on tasks in the kitchen such as reading recipes, measuring and knife skills. We had fun making witch or monster finger cookies for Halloween. Next, we discussed our food choices and why we eat what we eat. Location, budget and personal preferences all impact the foods we consume. This gave way to a quick focus on MN Agriculture. We used parsley grown in our classroom's tower garden in soup while students chopped the vegetables.
Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, we discussed setting the table. Students DO have a table setting assignment due this Friday where they can get extra credit for setting the whole table for a meal.
We will transition to hand sewing before winter break and machine sewing after. Though students generally love to cook, many discover skills they didn't know they had during the sewing unit. I am not a seamstress(!), but my goal with these hands-on projects is for students to continue to work on following directions, working independently and/or with a group, and overcoming challenges.

Students try acorn and butternut squash from Harner's farm.
Three Sisters
Students learned about Native American interplanting known as the Three Sisters. Corn, beans and squash are still major crops in Minnesota.
Table Setting
Students learned about informal and formal table setting. We practiced some napkin folding just for fun...and maybe extra credit!

About Mrs Miller
Hi! I am the Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Northfield Middle School. I have been teaching in the district since 2000. I may have even had some of you when you were in school as I began my career at the middle and high school. I am originally from Wisconsin and attended UW-Stout. I later got my Master's at St. Mary's in Winona and media license from Saint Cloud State.
I am busy with my family, just like all of you! My youngest, Ben, is a sophomore at NHS and my oldest, Gabe, started at UW-River Falls. Don't blink...it goes fast!
We are off to a great start in FCS. Keep checking Schoology and Skyward for the work your students are doing.
Black Items Needed by October 11
Does your student have a black t-shirt, bandana, sweatshirt/pants, or black socks? How about dark purple, gray, or navy blue? Is it ok to...redesign it?
The week of October 14 -16 students will be working on a reverse tie dye project. It is really fun for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos.
Students bring in dark, COTTON fabric and use a bleach/water solution to take the color out in cool patterns. The fabric does not have to be new, but if you do buy something, the cheaper the better usually. Items do not have to be plain, screen-printed designs/logos will not be affected by the reverse tie dye. I will have some cotton squares on hand for students who can't find anything to dye.
Ideally, black items should be at school by Friday, October 11 so students can plan their designs. Thank you!!
