NEWS FROM THE CAREERS DEPARTMENT
HB Aviation Industry Open Day
On Friday 14th February a group of Hastings Boys' High School students attended the first Hawke’s Bay Aviation Industry Open Day held at the Napier Aero Club. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore pathways and careers within the aviation sector as well as enjoying a firsthand look at drones, medical planes and rescue vehicles. Students were able to meet with a variety of educators including Air Hawke’s Bay, Air New Zealand Engineering School, Aroha Helicopters, NMIT, Massey University, Service IQ and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
As the Aviation Open Day coincided with Art Deco weekend, there were several vintage planes on display, and we were treated to flyovers during our time there.
Before going to the Aviation Open Day I thought I had a good plan for how to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering. My idea was to spend two years at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), then look for employment within New Zealand. However, after talking to some of the representatives from the aviation industry, it became clear that there was a better option. I learnt that, starting in 2026, Air New Zealand offers a one-year course that covers a range of topics, after which graduates can apply for an apprenticeship with establishments like Rocket Lab, RNZDF, Airbus, and Air New Zealand itself. This trip answered a lot of my questions and opened my eyes to other employment possibilities in aviation.

Experience Waikato
A group of Year 13 students were lucky to get the opportunity to travel to Hamilton to experience the University of Waikato in action. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Waite accompanied 21 students on the three day trip along with staff and students from Hastings Girls High School. We were assigned accommodation in the hostels and meals were provided in the dining hall.
Over the next few days we learned what it was like to live like a student. Just some of what we experienced over these days were things like:
The experience was invaluable as it has given us an idea if a University Course is something we would like to pursue.
Roman Lauvao-Puroto | Service to School Prefect
"The Waikato University tour helped me gain a better understanding of what university life looks like. I don't intend to study at a university after high school, but the tour was useful in that it gave me a better gauge of what, for example, an engineering course would entail at university."
Lincoln Mackie | Academic Prefect
“The Waikato University trip was a great experience for me! Given that I've never had the opportunity to stay on a university campus before, I was glad I was able to get a taste of what university life has to offer. In particular, I enjoyed all three of my activities I participated in, specifically the Law and Economics lectures! Where I was able to gain a better understanding on how lectures run at university and the content they cover when teaching Law and Economics. Ultimately, I encourage year 12's thinking of going into tertiary study, to go on the trip next year if it occurs! Ngā mihi nui.”
Phaizon Parkes | Community Engagement Prefect
“The Waikato experience was a great learning experience; the workshops we participated in displayed what it would be like to take those classes. But overall it wasn't the workshops which made it so great. It was the experience of being on campus. The best times were spent wandering around campus with some of the boys just checking out the different buildings. Being there with other schools also gave us the opportunity to see what campus life would be like in regards to meeting new people and making new relationships. Overall it was a great experience and opportunity to learn more about Waikato University.”

Gateway Programme - Can your business help?
We are looking for workplaces willing to take on some of our students!
What is Gateway?
Gateway funding enables secondary schools to give senior learners access to structured workplace learning integrated with school-based learning, which may align to one or more of the six Vocational Pathways.
Hastings Boys' High School offers a successful Gateway programme, providing students with hands-on experience in their chosen career paths.
The programme strength lies in its ability to provide real-world exposure, and to further enhance its impact, we are actively seeking to expand our network of workplace opportunities. More workplace posibilities will translate to greater student engagement and a richer, more meaningful learning experience.
This is where we need your help!
If you know of any businesses that would be willing share their workplace experience with a student for a day a week, to show them skills and opportunities to learn a trade, please contact- careers@hastingsboys.school.nz or claret@hastingsboys.school.nz
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Wear a Helmet
This is a reminder to all boys who travel to school by bike/electric scooter that they need to abide by the road rules and wear a helmet.
Boys will not be allowed to leave school at the end of the day on a bike/electric scooter without wearing one. To prevent them breaking the law their bike/electric scooter will be locked away until they can present themselves with a helmet or a parent comes to school to collect it.
SPORT
Chess
The start of 2025 has already seen several exciting chess achievements from our students.
In January, Dion Wilson participated in the 132 NZ Congress, competing in the championship, age group, lightning and rapid formats. He had an great tournament, playing 25 classical games and ultimately securing the NZ Under-16 Championship title. Just a couple of weeks later, Dion traveled to Melbourne to compete in the 2025 Oceania Zonal Chess Tournament. Facing some of the best players in the region, he won his grade in the blitz format. He narrowly missed out on earning the title of Candidate Master (CM), falling just one point short. Despite the disappointment, it’s a remarkable achievement for a 15-year-old to be competing at such a high level.
In February, the Hawke's Bay Chess Club hosted its annual Rapid Tournament. Both Dion Wilson and Jasreman Singh, a new Year 9 student at HBHS, took part in the event, with Jasreman emerging victorious in the Junior section.
If you're interested in learning or playing chess, join us at the chess club meetings every Tuesday lunchtime in the library. We are lucky enough to have a few volunteers, Ross, Sally and Ariel who generously give up their Tuesday lunch times to come in and coach. However, with the growing number of participants, we’re looking for more adults who can help coach or provide strong competition for our advanced players. If you're up for a chess match at 1pm on Tuesdays, please get in touch with the school.

Volleyball
Our Senior Volleyball team competed in the Super 8 Schools Competition held in Napier this week. They came third which is a very pleasing result and we are proud of this achievement. The Volleyball team is in a rebuild stage so this bodes well for the future! Thanks to the coaches too!

Softball
Over the summer break, several students from Hastings Boys' High School represented Softball Hawke's Bay at the Softball NZ Age Group Nationals. Their dedication, skill, and sportsmanship were on full display as they competed at the national level.
The athletes who participated were:
Denon Zurcher (HB U17s)
Jacob Davies (HB U19s)
Paradorn Boonprakob (HB U19s, U17s)
TeWhetuu Thomas (HB U19s, U17s)
Jay Jackson (HB U19s, U17s & Manawatu U15s)
A standout performer was TeWhetuu Thomas, who played a pivotal role in his team's performances throughout the U19s & U17s tournaments. His outstanding pitching earned him the title of U17s Pitcher of the Tournament and gained him selection into the U17s Tournament Team.
Ministock Racing
A few Hastings Boys' High School students race Ministocks!
Cade Dorward, Kayne Nicholson and Fin Shimmin as well as Old Boy Lachlan Timmins.
Kayne started racing in December 2022 and has since raced on 11 tracks.
This interest has taken him to tracks in Auckland, Huntly and Rotorua.
Fin races ministocks at Meeanee this is his second season. His number is 34b.
Both lads went to Rotorua last weekend to race in the MIP (Ministocks in Paradise) where 180 ministocks from around the country compete. They both did very well at that meeting.
We are sure to hear more about these students in the coming months.
If your son takes part in other sports or clubs and we don't know about it, please do let us know!
Look out for our Canoe Polo reps in the next newsletter!
