Emerson Update 09/27/24
School Safety and Security Update
Dear Emerson Community,
As a reminder, earlier this week, we conducted a lockdown drill at Emerson Middle School. During the drill, we reviewed and practiced our district's lockdown protocol: RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.
It's important to remember that these options are not in a specific order. The best course of action will depend on the situation. Situational awareness is key and we took time with your student to discuss each of those options during that drill.
Livonia Public Schools remains committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students. Our district has invested significant resources into safety measures, including staff training, building equipment, and emergency protocols.
Please be assured that we take every safety threat seriously and work closely with our building administration, central office staff, and local law enforcement to address any potential issues.
It's important to note that rumors can spread quickly, especially among teenagers. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's safety, please don't hesitate to contact the school office directly. We will always prioritize the safety of our students and will communicate any credible threats or dangerous situations promptly.
To help you understand our emergency procedures, please familiarize yourself with the following terms:
- Hold-in-place: This procedure is implemented during emergencies that require clear hallways, such as medical incidents. Students remain in their classrooms, and teaching and learning continue as usual.
- Lockdown: This more serious procedure is initiated only in the event of an active threat within the building. It's essential for students to follow established protocols during a lockdown.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
With Eagle Pride,
Bruce Rivera

📣 IMPORTANT: Attendance Updates
CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year due to absences. This can have a detrimental impact on a student's academic success, social development, and overall well-being.
Regular attendance is crucial for students to fully engage in their learning and develop important social skills. When students miss school frequently, they may struggle to keep up with their coursework, miss out on valuable learning opportunities, and have difficulty forming positive relationships with their peers and teachers.
If your child is experiencing chronic absenteeism, please know that we are here to help. Here are some steps you can take:
- Communicate with your child's teacher: Open and honest communication with your child's teacher can help identify any underlying issues that may be contributing to their absences.
- Schedule a meeting with the school counselor: Our counseling department is available to provide support and resources to help address attendance concerns. They can offer guidance on how to improve attendance and address any underlying issues that may be impacting your child's well-being.
- Explore potential barriers: Consider if there are any underlying health, transportation, or family issues that may be preventing your child from attending school regularly.
- Encourage regular attendance: Reinforce the importance of attending school and create a positive and supportive home environment that promotes learning.
We understand that unexpected absences may occur, but it is important to minimize them as much as possible. By working together, we can ensure that your child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to the counseling department if you have any concerns or questions. We are committed to supporting your child's success.
Reporting Absences
There are two ways you can report an absence for your student at Emerson.
Option 1:
- Go to the Emerson Middle School website.
- Click on "Report an Absence" under Quicklinks.
- Fill out the Google Form (also at the top of this newsletter).
Option 2:
- Call the attendance line at 734-744-2666.
- Please leave a detailed message about your student's absence.
- Include their name, reason for absence and any specifics we may need to know.
Are Your Immunization Records Up to Date?
Please check with your family doctor to make sure that your student is up to date on their immunizations. Letters are in the mail for those students who are not shown as complete in the Michigan Immunization Registry.
Livonia Public Schools typically sets an Exclusion Date for mid October - this means that all students who are not fully vaccinated or waivered by then will be excluded from coming to school.

A few key things to note:
Individualized Health Care Plans DUE
Dear Parents of students with medical needs,
In planning for the upcoming year, I wanted to remind you to notify the school of any health care needs that your student may have. If your student has a medical condition including a severe allergy, asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy an Individualized Health Care Plan (attached below) needs to be updated annually by your physician to identify what actions need to be taken should an emergency situation arise.
In addition, if your student requires medication at school for any reason, please complete the attached Medication Authorization Form with your physician and return it with the medication to the main office ASAP.
**If your child needs more than one medication we need a Medication Authorization Form completed for each medication provided to the school.**
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Shannon Matuska at 734-744-2665 ext. 79759 or by email: smatuska@livoniapublicschools.org.
Thank you,
Shannon Matuska

Thank you for your interest in Livonia Public Schools Middle School Robotics Teams and Club at the middle school level. This season we will be offering very active Competition Teams and a fun and engaging Robotics Club to learn more about robotics. This interest survey is designed to help us understand to what extent you are interested in FIRST Robotics and what kind of experience you are seeking.
The Competition Teams require hours of community service & stem activities, heavy fundraising, travel to competitions and parent commitment. The Robotics Club will be a more relaxed learning experience and a fun orientation to robotics.
