Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
I hope you and your kids are getting ready for a well-earned vacation while educators take time out from teaching to attend several workshops and training sessions in order to give your kids the finest education possible.
We advise kids to read about things they are interested in even during a break from school. Math is something we cannot abandon, eitther. One excellent short-term activity that will help pupils is mental math. The more mental math exercises your kids get, the quicker they can answer math problems and real-world scenarios.
Once we are back from the break, students and teachers will get ready for Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday Nov. 7 and Friday Nov. 8. Please speak with your child's teacher to find out how they are doing and what assignments are still due or need to be completed. Please get in touch with your child's teacher at any time.
Wishing you and your children a wonderful break.
Sincerely,
John Osorio
Assistant Principal

4th Grade
4th graders are working on using arrays and triangles to understand and express the inverse relationship between multiplication and division, and we played some math games together as a class to practice math and collaborative skills! Students are practicing communicating in small groups to include everyone, check for understanding and support vocabulary use.
5th Grade
Hello 5th grade families!
This short week was filled with lots of fun and unique learning! Monday we celebrated Indigenous People’s Day. Take time, if you can, to talk with your student about what they learned, and how we benefit here in St. Paul by the colonization of the Dakota people.
This week, we also finished reading the fall classic Coraline, and Wednesday got to watch the movie! Students are working on connections between types of media.
I hope you all have a safe and fun MEA break!

This week 1st grade artists are learning about self portraits in various styles. They are creating self portraits using the style of Cubism. 4th grade artists are learning about the drawing technique of Foreshortening and they are creating portraits that are drawn from an aerial view as if they are falling through the air into a new mysterious place.
Physical Education
This week in PE the 1st graders and 4th graders are learning how to get physical activity in fun ways like dancing. We have also been learning what muscles are and why they are important for us. This upcoming week I will have 1st graders and 4th graders again where we will continue working on improving our fitness levels (muscular endurance/strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility) in fun ways. The hope is to get the students as much activity as possible during the times that we have them. We are also learning skills and movement patterns to improve coordination, and balance. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 651-603-4652 or shaw.wiczek@stpaul.k12.mn.us

News from Nurse Jenny
The flu season is upon us. Prevention is key in keeping our students in school and learning. Below are tips from the Minnesota Department of Health on ways to prevent the spread of influenza.
1. Get vaccinated.
2. Avoid being around others who are sick.
3. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue or your sleeve.
4. Wash your hands often.
5. Do not share drinking cups and straws.
6. Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (door knobs, refrigerator handles, phones, water faucets).
Thank you for keeping your kids home from any in-person school events for 24 hours after having a fever of 100 or above (without the use of fever reducing medication). Children also need to stay at home from any in-person school events for 24 hours after vomiting. The benefit of the Online School is that they can continue to learn even when they are feeling under the weather. Please encourage your child to participate in school when they are having mild symptoms.
Contact Nurse Jenny if you want more information on flu prevention or any other health related topic at 651-419-1219 or Jennifer.martineau@spps.org.

Title I
Dear Parents,
Teachers and parents will have the chance to discuss a variety of topics pertaining to your children's education during the Parent-Teacher conferences. Please spend a few minutes discussing the shared responsibilities and accessing the Schoo-Parent-Student compact.
Everyone knows that when we take the time to study, talk about, and comprehend the significance of our participation in the educational context, we can do better. In order for our kids to succeed in school, it's also critical that we all have certain obligations to fulfill.
Please go over the Compact's Shared Responsibilities with your kids.
