Arbor Heights Family Newsletter
We are the Junior Seahawks!
Hello Families,
Our school will be holding those conferences the week of Thanksgiving on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 25-27). Mark your calendars.
Nov 25 - 27 Conference Week (no school)
Nov 28 -29 - Thanksgiving Break (no school)
2nd Grade:
Ms. Parson's, Ms. Miller's, Ms Coghill's and Ms. McDonough's 2nd Graders got to perform at McCaw Hall Thursday Night! They performed on the same stage as the professional dancers from The Pacific Northwest Ballet. They did such an amazing job!
What's happening in Art:
Students Artwork will come home at parent teacher conferences from your child's classroom teacher. If you are not conferencing during that time, please do not worry. I will see it that your child brings home their work. If you'd prefer, I hold it for safe pick up because backpacks can be full as is, clay breaks, etc., please email me a note and I can set it aside for you to pick up from our school office. Notes will accompany your child's portfolio so you can better enjoy their artwork.

The West Seattle Thriftway has an amazing 1% Cash Back for the Community program and Arbor Heights Elementary PTSA is one of the recipients! To participate, all you have to do is turn in your Thriftway receipts to the PTSA mailbox in the AH School Office, and a member of the PTSA will turn them in with the proper paperwork. Here are some updates from our librarian: Arbor Heights Junior Seahawks are reading up a storm this Fall. In September and October alone, they checked out over 6,000 books from our school library! Looking for a reading challenge or a way to track reading at home or school? Junior Seahawk readers can track their reading using one of the fun bookmarks or passports available in our library.
In the library, we have been highlighting some of this year’s Washington Library Association and Pacific Northwest Library Association book award nominees. Check out the titles using the links below! Washington Library Association Book Awards PNW Library Association Young Readers Choice Award (Junior Division Gr 4-6)
Fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in Global Reading Challenge, a battle of the books program sponsored by the Seattle Public Library. Participating students read books from the Global Reading Challenge list, form teams and participate in an in-school challenge where teams work together to answer questions about the books. The winning team from our school moves on to the semi-finals. Students will hear about the GRC during their library time this month and books will be available through our school library and SPL. Find out more information on the SPL Global Reading Challenge Page.
Picture day and retake day has passed
School portraits: all portraits previously photographed can be accessed via our website: Order School Photos — Yuen Lui School & Sports Photograph. The keyword is Arbor Heights, and images are password protected by an online code, which is your student's SPS ID number. All portraits that require an online code are shipped directly to your home.
Student Support and Resources:
It's getting very cold outside. Please send your child to school with something to keep them warm. If you need resources such as jackets, warm clothes, or any other resources, please reach out to our social worker: jgreenstein@seattleschools.org
Math and Reading Supports
To set your child up for success there are additional math and reading practices your child can do at home to prepare for school. Students can get extra math practice on Success Maker Math. It's an online platform that students can log in from school and home. This gives students practice at their individual level and pace.
Some students will also have access to Success Maker Reading. Your child should be reading every night; read a book they checked out from the library, read a story from Success Maker Reading, or you can read a story with your child.
Ask them questions about the story and then ask for text evidence from the book to justify their thinking. "What do you think this word means from the story?" "What is the theme of the story?" "What part of the story made you think that?"
