Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 21 Families and Community Members,
The Maine winter cold has settled in and has certainly tested our resilience, with temperatures making it unsafe for our elementary students to have outdoor recess many days this week. I know how difficult it is for our young learners to maintain their energy and focus when unable to get that much-needed outdoor time to run, play, and reset.
I want to particularly acknowledge our elementary students who, despite being confined indoors, successfully completed their NWEA assessments this week. Managing standardized testing is challenging enough under normal circumstances, but to do so while unable to expend energy outdoors shows remarkable adaptability and focus. Our students and teachers have demonstrated incredible patience and perseverance.
Thank you to everyone for another successful week. Fingers crossed for slightly warmer temperatures next week so we can all get outside to enjoy the Maine winter.
Much love,
Terri Cooper

No skis on the buses
Dear Parents,
We would like to inform you that, for safety and storage reasons, skis and ski equipment cannot be transported on the school bus during AM or PM school bus routes. The limited space and potential safety hazards prevent us from allowing such items on board.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety of all students during their bus rides. Please make alternative arrangements to transport skis and ski gear.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Chris Pasciuto
RSU 21 Transportation Manager

District News
Inside the classroom: New year, new energy!
With the new year comes a renewed energy in RSU 21 classrooms! In Mrs. Doolin's class at Kennebunkport Consolidated School, students were busy writing their own stories.
At Sea Road School, third-graders spent one afternoon painting, reading and doing other arts and crafts.
And at Kennebunk Elementary School, some PreK students were doing what they do best: being silly, wiggly four-year-olds! Some friends even wanted to show off their best "Spidey poses."
Everyday learning at RSU 21 is anything but ordinary!
WE STILL NEED HOST FAMILIES!
We have nearly secured placements for all twelve students coming over from Madrid, Spain. However, we still urgently need one more family to host! Please sign up ASAP.
Background
In the 2023-2024 school year, five RSU 21 families hosted students from Madrid, Spain as part of a multi-cultural and language immersion program with Gredos San Diego Cooperativa (GSD). It was a fantastic experience for both the visiting students and the host families. This year, the program is being expanded to 12 students.
Important information for prospective host families
- Students will arrive on Jan. 18 and depart on Feb. 14, 2025
- The students are in grades 8 and 10.
- Students will be matched with host families based on factors like age and common interests.
- Each family will be given a $100 per week stipend, or $400 total.
- Families are encouraged to take students to local areas of interest on the weekends and should take care of their student as if they were a member of their family.
- If you do not have a spare room, guest students can share a room with their host brother or sister as long as they are the same gender.
- Students must be provided a study desk at the host family’s home to allow them to work on tasks from their school in Spain.
- Host family must be able to provide transportation from/to the Portsmouth, NH bus station for the student’s arrival/departure.

Thanks to the community's incredible support, the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel (EFKA) has provided nearly $1.8 million to teachers and students in RSU 21's six schools in support of STEM, Music, Literacy, the Arts, and Professional Development since 2006.
To ensure EFKA is able to continue doing its amazing work, they need donations! These tax-deductible donations help them empower our students and provide our educators with the tools they need to succeed.
