Wednesday is Pizza Day!
Dear First Grade families
We will be having a quick Valentine’s Day card exchange to celebrate the holiday! To make things run smoothly and save time, please have your scholar bring cards without individual names on them. Instead, simply write your scholar’s name on the cards. This will help ensure the exchange is fun, quick, and easy for everyone!
Thank you for your understanding and support as we make this a sweet and simple celebration for the kids.
Warm regards,
Sienna Hills First Grade Team
Fluency Practice!
A Sneak Peek Into Our Week In...
Wit & Wisdom (Reading)
Scholars will continue Module 3: Powerful Forces (Lessons 20- 23). Students participate in a discussion with a partner to practice asking and answering questions about what the speaker says. Additionally, students will complete Focusing Question Task 3. Also, scholars will be introduced to a new text, Brave Irene. They notice and wonder about this text, which tells the story of a determined girl who sets off on a mission during a blizzard. Additionally, students build upon their work with signaling unknown words in Module 2 and earlier in Module 3 by becoming word detectives as they use clues within the word itself to figure out the meaning of an unknown word.
Essential Question: How do people respond to the powerful force of the wind?
Focusing Question: How do characters respond to the powerful force of the wind?
Fundations (Phonics)
Scholars will begin Unit 10, Week 1: Suffixes. In this unit we will learn about adding suffixes -s, -ed, -ing to five syllable words. We will also learn new vowel teams oa, oe, ow, ou, oo, ue, ew, au, aw. Our trick words for this unit are: many, any, how, now, down, out, about, our.
Math
Scholars will begin Topic C: Comparison Word Problems with Measurement (Lessons 9 - 12). Topic C leverages length situations to work toward mastery of comparison word problems. This module revisits a word problem type and introduces new problem types. See the following examples below.
Compare with difference unknown: Two given lengths are compared to find how much longer or how much shorter one is than the other. (Lesson 10, 11)
Compare with bigger quantity (or longer length) unknown: The smaller length and the difference between the lengths are given to find the longer length. (Lesson 12)
Science
Scholars will continue Module 3: Sound! Scholars will be studying The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura. While studying this orchestra, scholars will be prompted with a series of questions, such as the Essential Question: How does the Recycled Orchestra make music? By studying how the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura uses discarded objects to make music, we can understand that sound is caused by vibrating objects and sound can cause objects to vibrate.
- Lesson 2: Scholars will describe similarities between recycled instruments and ordinary instruments.
- Lesson 3: Scholars will begin developing a class model that shows how the recycled orchestra makes music.
- Lesson 4: Scholars will observe the pattern that instruments must be touched or moved to make sound.
