Message from Principal Coning
Hello Guardians,
Today and tomorrow are memorable days in our lives and in the history of the United States. There is a lot to consider and to pay attention to. I hope you are talking with each other, your teachers, and your families about the state of our country, our culture, and the world. Please know that our school district and superintendent have provided some messaging as well as a toolkit that you can find on our PPS website: https://www.pps.net/2024electionsupport
Also, students we have started the 2nd Quarter and it’s important to begin strong and to stay on top of your school work. Be Prepared and be Engaged in your classes to the best of your ability. Please keep your technology away all day and remain in your classes. Our school values are summed up in an acronym, PEAK and the A stands for advocating for yourself and for others with Kindness. If you have a question for your teacher, ask them. For example, it’s fair to want to understand the grade you have earned thus far for Quarter 1.
Please let me know what you need over the next few days as citizens who are 18 years old and older elect a new President of the United States. We are here for you and each other as an Ida B. Wells High School community.

Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences
Fall is here and Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences are coming up!
IN-PERSON: 11/25, Monday: 8:30am - 8:30pm
VIRTUAL: 11/26, Tuesday: 8:30am-8:30pm
As always, you can contact your student's teacher at any time outside of conferences. Now that Quarter 1 grades are completed, the IBW "priority student conference team" will be reaching out to families whose students are a priority based on 1st quarter grades (those with Ds or F/NGs in core classes). We will open our conference program for everyone on 11/15 at 8:30am (and will close at 12:00pm on 11/21).
Conferences provide an opportunity for the student, teacher, and families to come together and discuss the challenges and potential solutions to improve the student's academic performance and overall experience in the class.
STUDENTS!
Our goal is to have both your family and you at these conferences whenever possible. You are at the center of these conversations and should be present whenever possible.
If you are unable to get an appointment with a particular teacher, please email them. Conferences are only one of many options to meet with a teacher.
More information to come on how to register!

News from the Yearbook Room
IMPORTANT YEARBOOK UPDATE:
We currently have less than 600 pre-orders for the 2024-2025 yearbook. Pre-order numbers are used to determine how many books we will order for the year. If this number is low, it's possible that people hoping to buy a yearbook once they arrive in May will find that the books are already sold out. If you want to guarantee a yearbook for this year, please pre-order yours on SchoolPay. The cost of the book will be going up to $75 after winter break, so save yourself the $10 price hike and order yours now!
Don't Want Your Photo in the Yearbook or a Different Name?
If you don't want your school picture in the yearbook this year or you would like a different name than shown in StudentVue, please contact Mr. Higbee at khigbee@pps.net or let him know in room 142 before school or at lunch! Make sure to let us know by December 1st.
Geology Class
On Friday, October 25th, Ms. Brown's Geology class took a field trip to PSU where they examined minerals in igneous rocks using petrographic microscopes, got to hold 4.5 billion year old meteorites, talked to professors and graduate students while exploring the Geology department, and checked out the exhibit at the Schnitzer Art Museum on campus. (They even found Ida B. Wells in an art exhibit painting!) This class is offered for dual-credit through the PSU Challenge Program, allowing students to earn 8 college quarter credits over the year and have field experiences on Mt. St. Helens and the Columbia River Gorge. Additionally, students receive a PSU student ID which gives them access to the university library and other campus buildings, tutoring services, and free admission to movies at the 5th Avenue Cinema.

(SW)2 Fall Musical - Tickets Now Available!

Hadestown: Teen Edition
Music, Lyrics, and Book: AnaĂŻs Mitchell
Direction: Jamie M. Miller
Performing: November 14-23, 2024
Tickets onsale now at southweststageworks.com
**Seating is Limited!**
Winner of 14 Tony Awards during it's Broadway run, the Teen Edition of this intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.
After its origins as a DIY community theatre project in 2006 and a studio album in 2010, Hadestown electrified audiences with its 2016 world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop, becoming the longest-running show in that celebrated theatre’s 40-year history. The production then received its Canadian premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017 and then a 2018 sold-out engagement at London’s National Theatre. Hadestown opened on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019, developed with and directed by Rachel Chavkin, starring Reeve Carney, André De Shields, Amber Gray, Eva Noblezada and Patrick Page. Hadestown made its West End debut in February 2024 at the Lyric Theatre, London. Directed by Chavkin, the production featured Dónal Finn, Grace Hodgett Young, Zachary James, Melanie La Barrie and Gloria Onitiri.
Due to occasional coarse language, this musical is considered appropriate for ages Upper Elementary and Older

Local Artist with ties to IBWHS has Art Show
Local artist Jeremy Okai Davis, who painted several murals in our main hallway at IBW in 2022, has an art opening at Elizabeth Leach Gallery this Thursday beginning at 5:00 pm. This new body of work titled, "From the stage, a calling", explores the rich history of Black performance, drawing inspiration from the vibrant worlds of comedy, music, vaudeville, and even magic. Davis seeks to capture the resilience, creativity, and joy that Black performers have brought to the stage, often against the backdrop of systemic oppression. Performance, for many Black artists, has always been more than just entertainment—it’s been a powerful form of expression, resistance, and identity. The parallels between this and his practice are undeniable. More...https://www.elizabethleach.com/exhibition-blog/2024/davis-from-the-stage
Staff and students are welcome to come out and join several of us from the art department if you'd like!
