Parent/Teacher Conferences Reminder
Hello Parents/Guardians,
With registration for parent/teacher conferences underway, I wanted to send out a reminder email about conference sign up. As shared in previous communication, all conferences held on November 21 will be in-person (Mill Middle) from 5-8 PM. Additionally, all conferences on November 25 from 12:30-3:30 PM will take place in-person (Mill Middle).
For our last session on November 25 from 5-8 PM all conferences will be virtual.
When registering for conferences all parents/guardians will see an in-person and virtual conference option. Parents/Guardians should only choose the virtual option if registering for a conference on November 25 from 5-8 PM. For all other conferences, (November 21, 5-8 PM and November 25, and November 25 12:30-3:30 PM) parents should select in person, as those conferences will take place at Mill.
If a parent/guardian selects the virtual conference option during an in-person time slot, the conference will still be scheduled, but will take place in-person only.
If a parent/guardian selects the in-person conference option during a virtual time slot, the conference will still be scheduled, but will take place virtually only.
Thank you and please feel free to reach out with any questions.

The Positivity Project
Dear Mill Families,
This week, our school community has spent time focusing on the character strength of Bravery. Bravery means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength, even when you know things are difficult or scary.
Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness but instead the overcoming of fear.
Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. For example, some people with social anxiety are brave just by leaving their houses and talking with people. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears, such as swimming or playing a sport. And, on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.
To practice and encourage the character strength of bravery at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Fall Celebrations:
With the help of students and faculty, our librarian, Mrs. Waddell arranged for a display in the Library to showcase three fall celebrations. Day of the Dead, Dia los Muertos, Halloween, and Diwali all fell within the same week. We created a cross-cultural display to help educate all students about the traditions associated with each holiday. Students visited on their own and with various social studies and Spanish classes, as well as with a few of our school clubs. They were able to complete a Fact Hunt to learn about all three traditions. Thank you to all who helped make our first display possible!

*NEW* Club Spotlight:
Spanish Club with Mrs. Bubb
This year Señora Bubb and the Mill Spanish Club worked collaboratively with the school librarian, Mrs. Waddell to create an “ofrenda” in the library.
An ofrenda (Spanish: "offering") is the offering placed on a home altar during the annual and traditional Mexican Día de los Muertos celebration. An ofrenda, which may be quite large and elaborate, is usually created by the family members of a person who has died and is intended to welcome the deceased to the altar setting.
Mrs. Waddell set up the ofrenda, incorporating, as well as describing the significance of each element, item, or decoration.
The students in the Spanish club took 2 weeks to make and decorate “calaveras de azucar” (sugar skulls) by hand to place on the ofrenda. The skulls represent loved ones who have passed away and are made of sugar to dissolve in the rain signifying the temporary status of life.
The sixth-grade students also learned about the “Cempasuchil” or marigold, the flower of The Day of the Dead” and created some to place on the ofrenda as well.
