Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
It is tax credit time! Did you know that our children’s field trips and our outdoor environment depend solely on your donations? It is possible for a student to take a trip for “free” funded by tax credit. Additionally, our outdoor environment for our primary children is staffed by parents. Their salaries are paid through our tax credit dollars which is approximately $50,000.00 a year. Primary parents, without tax credit dollars, we will be unable to provide this beautiful experience for our children. The most incredible part about a tax credit donation is that it is a tax credit for you! It can either be used to offset a tax liability or you receive a refund at tax time. Please consider donating here today to Principal’s Discretion for use in the outdoor environment or Field Trips: https://phoenixelem.revtrak.net/Tax-Credit-Donation/ Our office manager Claire is also available in the school office to accept your tax credit donations. It’s a win/win donation for our children and for taxpayers!
Goodness gracious what an incredible time we had at our Literacy Night held at the Burton Barr Library on Wednesday evening. Our younger children showed up and brought their parents to enjoy an array of fun activities from library tours to trail mix making. A big thank you to Ms. Carwitz for her work in organizing and implementing this event for our school!
Two Shaw staff members were honored by our staff as Phoenix Elementary Star Award winners. Mr. Leslie Pozo, our music teacher and Ms. Patti Karnes, our media clerk were recognized for the extraordinary work they do for our staff, students, and community. Thank you, Ms. Patti and Mr. Pozo, for making our daily experience so much richer!
Wednesday, November 20th is our next Site Council and PTA Meeting. From 5:30-6:00 we will hear from our Reading Interventionist Ms. Debbie Carwitz on the enriching support she offers our children in the area of reading fluency and comprehension. Our PTA meeting will follow from 6:00-7:00. Childcare will be available from 6:00-7:00 only. Both meetings will be held in the cafeteria.
Parents, events cannot happen without YOU! Please visit our PTA website: https://sites.google.com/view/shawmontessoripta/home scroll halfway down the page to “We Need Volunteers” and sign up. You promised when you enrolled to do 10 hours of volunteer service per year. Please keep your promise and do your part.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall
Nurse Rose
Note From the Nurse: Just a reminder if your student has a fever of 100.0 or above, they need to remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Colds, coughs, runny noses and sore throats are common in kids and do not require that children stay home from school, especially if symptoms are mild. However, if cold symptoms include fever or a cough that is excessive enough to disrupt their learning, you should keep your child home to rest. Let me know if you have any questions/concerns at 602.257.3900 thanks! Rose RN/Shaw Montessori School Nurse

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
We began our first week with basil & pesto. I am surprised by how many students have enjoyed the pesto thus far. Unfortunately, making pesto is too time-consumptive for a 45-minute class, so I have premade all the pesto. We spend most of the instructional time reading about the plant, observing its structure (flowers & seeds) and smelling the aroma. We also looked one of basil’s cousins, mint. Basil is part of the mint family and shares a lot of characteristics. They call basil, “The king of herbs”. Thank you to our middle school helpers for making pesto!
Last weekend, the Mollen Foundation & Honorhealth Foundation hosted the 49th annual Phoenix 10k. I petitioned the middle school to run the mile and help raise funds for child nutrition. Many of them expressed interest BUT only two of them woke up early on Sunday for the run: Hazel Kutsko and Maddie Gomez. They even snuck into the 5k with me and some friends! Excellent job you two!
We processed our turkeys this week! They had a good life on campus filled with delicious treats. Over 20 middle schoolers participated in this lesson. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping us with the processing. We will be baking the turkeys next week for our Friendsgiving. All the volunteer cooking slots have been filled so I asked our president to extend a few more options. If you have not signed up and would like to bring a dish next Friday, then please follow the link below. The Friendsgiving is scheduled for November 22nd from 10:30-12:30. You can bring your food to the front office on Friday morning. THANK YOU! https://signup.com/go/FKzEZXS
The following volunteer dates are on the calendar:
· December 3rd & 5th (holiday concert afterparty)
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email (insects included). Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!

Shaw PTA
As Principal Engdall mentioned above, we hope you'll join us for the Site Council meeting at 5:30, followed by the PTA meeting from 6:00 to 7:00. We’ll be sharing some exciting updates on the results of the Fun Run and how the funds raised will support our campus improvements and ongoing PTA events throughout the year.
A special thank you to Joy and Heather for their incredible dedication over the past several weeks in making this event possible. Your hard work will directly benefit our school and community. And of course, a big thank you to all the volunteers, donors, and those who encouraged others to contribute – your support truly makes a difference!
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
