What's Happening in Math Classes
6th Grade: Our sixth grade students are working on ratio tables, unit rates, ratios and equivalent ratios. This work has established the foundations for upcoming work with percentages and solving percent problems.
7th Grade and Pre-Algebra: Our 7th grade math students have just finished their own unit with ratios and proportions. This included reviewing unit rates, equivalent ratios and ratios and then using that background knowledge for writing and solving proportions. Students have now begun to work with converting fractions, decimals and percentages fluently.
8th Grade: Students in 8th grade math are currently working with functions. In this unit, they will begin to identify the domain and range of a function and will be able to tell the difference between linear, exponential and quadratic functions.
Algebra: Algebra students are currently working through exponential equations and functions. This week they are wrapping up the first half of the unit with an assessment on properties of square roots and exponents. Next week they will begin the second half of the unit, which will culminate in creating a brochure that uses a real-world example of exponential growth or decay.
Geometry: Geometry students are working with theorems of similar polygons and the Pythagorean Theorem.
Finally, please remember that Pioneer is now offering after-school math help twice a week through “Math Club.” Math Club takes place on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45 - 3:45 in Mr. Martin’s room (B101). This is a great opportunity for students to finish any missing work, complete any retakes of assessments or just practice math skills. There is an activity bus available. Students are expected to be on-time, stay for the duration of the club and continue to follow the Pioneer Middle School rules while in Math Club.
