A Note from Mrs. Cornett
It was a great week to be an Eagle! We celebrated teaching assistant and custodian appreciation days this week. Thank you to everyone on the Eagle team that ensures our students have a safe and successful learning experience. It takes a team of dedicated people to make VMS the best middle school in Texas and we appreciate everyone on our team. Thank you to Mr. Gonzalez and his class for showing their appreciation for our custodial staff. And thank you to our PTO and parent volunteers for your donations. The admin team had fun running around campus with our staff appreciation staff cart on Wednesday. Not only did everyone on staff get a yummy treat, there may have been a few laughs for our steering capabilities.
Our 8th grade US history classes had a fun week discussing the issues of the Constitutional Convention using civil discourse. They had small group debates and students did a fantastic job supporting their ideas with sound reasoning and expressing their ideas in a respectful manner. This is a valuable real world skill for our students and I am proud of their dedication to their learning.
Our Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classes just started their flour baby project as part of the child development unit where they learn about physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. This project is a favorite among our students and staff. Thank you to all the grandparents who have helped watch their flour grandbabies over the weekend. I love all the photos that are shared with me and enjoy seeing the VMS flour babies at weekend sporting events, family dinners, and even church! If you see an Eagle with their flour baby, stop and ask them about this project and what they have learned about child development, how to keep their child safe, what activities they did with their flour child and which of the areas of development that activity targeted. Getting our community involved is one of the highlights of this project and it brings the learning to life for our students.
Mrs. Lewis' art classes are working on a fun project where they select a famous work of art, sketch it, and then apply pieces of paper to create a mosaic version of the art work. The project requires attention to detail. The students are creating beautiful pieces that I cannot wait to display around campus.
A huge shout out to our 6th and 8th grade students. They tied for the class with the top attendance for the week of September 23rd-27th. They earned blacktop time for their attendance. Keep up the good work 6th and 8th grade! Parents, thank you for making sure your child gets to school on time and is present daily. We know their attendance in class allows them opportunities to learn that cannot be replicated outside of the classroom.

Volleyball
Congratulations to the 8th grade volleyball teams for their victories over Medina Valley this week. B team won 25-19, 19-25, 25-5. A team won 25-18, 25-10. The girls have been working hard in practice and it’s evident in our games. Good luck next week as you take on South in your last home match of the season!
Congrats to the 7th grade volleyball teams on great wins against Medina valley middle. Both teams won in 2 sets and played with heart, hustle, and maximum effort! Great job girls.
Football
7th grade football played Medina Valley at home on Tuesday evening. "B" team started the evening off strong with a hard-fought game. The boys played hard until the final buzzer sounded and finished with a 13-12 victory. "A" team followed up with a strong showing on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the boys held Medina Valley to very few yards, while scoring five touchdowns on offense and came out with a 38-6 victory. Next weeks game against South should determine the district champions!
8th grade shook off slow starts and came away with a pair of road victories Tuesday night. The Eagles showed great perseverance. The boys are still in the running for a district title as we close out the season against BMSS and Fredericksburg.
Cross Country
The VMS Cross Country team finished their season with the district meet at Medina Valley on Saturday.
7th grade boys placed 2nd overall in district. They missed first place by only two points. Dana Hempton clinched 1st place for the whole district for 7th grade boys. The 3rd place spot went to KJ Rogers who had the most exciting finish of the day. He tracked down and passed an opponent for the 3rd place position in the last 100 yards of the race. What a great example of never giving up until the race is done! Taylor Lefler and Hunter Temple finished in the top 20 for the district for 7th grade boys.
Lucille Frank captured the 2nd place podium spot for 7th grade girls.
Our 8th grade girls also had an amazing showing. Ansley Schiller earned 5th overall in the district and Anorah Cerean barely missed the top 20 with a 22nd place overall finish.
8th grade boys had only three runners in the district competition. Even so, Braden Hemption took the 11th place spot in the district.
Kenna Malmberg and Adlin Schnell have career personal records. Sadie Steinke could not finish the race due to an injury but fought through until the end and showed heart, grit, and determination.
Woohoo! Congratulations to the VMS Eagle Cross Country team for a fantastic season. The dedication of these Eagles (and the parents driving car pool) is impressive!

School safety is very important, and it's up to all of us to work together as a team to prevent bad things from happening.
If we all stay alert and work as a team to report dangerous or suspicious activity, we can help keep our schools safe.
