Coping Skills & Self Care
Thank you for hanging in with us on our journey through Mental Health Awareness Month. To wrap up this initiative, we will cover coping skills and self care. Coping skills are strategies people use to manage stress and intense emotions. Even when people aren’t struggling with mental health, it’s important to incorporate coping skills. This helps our brains form and know what tools will help access calmness. Our brain is then able to access them during stressful situations. Here are some simple strategies you can use at home to help your child build a coping skills toolbox.
Coping skills go hand in hand with self care. Practicing self care can help children be aware of their emotions, behaviors and moods. When children are able to recognize these things within their body, they are able to acknowledge what their body may need in the moment. This is especially helpful when they are faced with negative emotions such as sadness or anger. The hope would be that with adequate self care and a coping skills toolbox, the child would be able to regulate their body enough to maintain safety and calm down.
PBS Kids offers more great information and strategies. Check out this article 11 Simple Self-Care Habits for Kids.

Watch D.O.G.S.
Our WatchD.O.G.S. program is in full swing! “Dads” (or dad-like figures) who are interested in signing up to volunteer for a full or half day should contact Angela Bender (abender@otsegops.org) or Jen Knight (jknight@otsegops.org) via email to schedule a date.
When you volunteer, you will receive a schedule for the day that allows you to help out in different classrooms doing a wide range of activities (reading a story, working with a child 1:1, playing a game with a small group). You will also have scheduled time on the playground and lunchroom to interact with students and be a positive role model for them. We need a current background check on file before you can volunteer.
Sign up for Mrs. Knight's Remind!
