New this summer is Freshmen Orientation. All incoming freshmen should attend. It will be held on Tuesday, August 20, starting at 8:00 AM and wrapping up around noon when Sentinel Day starts. This event differs from Sentinel Day and provides incoming freshmen with a student-led orientation of SHS from upperclassmen. Please register your student for this event.

Even though school is not in session during the summer, you may see students at Steilacoom High School, as they participate in Career and Technical Education programs provided through our partnership with the Pierce County Skills Center. You may also see some students at our other schools, with childcare services provided through a partnership with Right at School. We are grateful for our community partnerships, which allow us to meet the needs of students and families at little or no cost to taxpayers. These important partnerships help us leverage all of our state and local funding, including the levy, on activities that support student learning and activities during the school year.

These partnerships are highlighted each summer as we present our annual budget proposals to the School Board for review and approval. This year, the Board will hold their public hearing on August 21 at 6:00 p.m. and the public is invited to attend and comment on the budget proposal. The full proposal has been posted on our website since May and was also shared at the board meeting on June 12. You can find the proposal and other supporting documents on our website at www.steilacoom.k12.wa.us/budget.

If you have any comments or suggestions after reviewing the materials, please email us at info@steilacoom.k12.wa.us between now and August 21. This will allow us to consider your suggestions as part of the budget approval process. Our staff will also respond to any questions you may have prior to the budget hearing. Of course, you can also attend the budget hearing and let the School Board know your thoughts in person.

Our budget is a reflection of our district’s priorities and our commitment to attain our academic and fiscal goals. We look forward to hearing from you as part of the process.
