Weekly Update

This month we have had many more absences than is typical for November at LHS. We need your help to wrap up 2024 and have your students attend every day that remains this year; it will be 2025 before we know it! Attending school every day is not only about learning the curriculum but also about helping our students learn the social skills and problem-solving skills they will need when they graduate. There are 17 days in the school building before we count down to the new year, so finish strong Raiders!

And here are some Raider STRONG students that had perfect attendance for the 1st quarter! See below for a full list of students with perfect attendance.

Students interested in receiving tutoring should fill out this student interest form. Currently, tutoring is offered before or after school at LHS (by appointment). We also offer virtual tutoring (by appointment). Please email Theresa Smith at tmsmith@smcps.org for more information.

Unfortunately, due to recent incidents of vandalism and graffiti, we have been left with no choice but to temporarily close some of the bathrooms in the buidling. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our school community. Until further notice, the restrooms in the 1F and 2F sections, as well as the C section will be closed in the morning (7:50AM-8AM) and during lunch (12:07PM-1:07PM). You are to use the restrooms in the 1E and 2E sections during these times.

We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, and we apologize for any disruption this may cause to your daily routine. However, we must take these incidents seriously and take necessary actions to prevent them from happening again in the future.

If you are a witness to any of these incidents, please report it to a teacher, counselor, or school administrator. We appreciate all of you that continue to be Raider STRONG every day!

Congrats to our Football Team! They won the Regional Championship Game and are headed to the State Semi-Final Game! They will play Mergentha.

On November 13, 2024, several of our Senior Athletes signed to compete at the next level!

On November 16th, the LHS Dance Team was invited to perform at the 20th annual Halftime Spirit Extravaganza for the NCAA Navy vs. Tulane University football game in Annapolis at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Fourteen of our dancers along with fifteen other teams across Maryland, Virginia, DC, Pennsylvania and North Carolina had a phenomenal opportunity to visit and experience a place of higher education and the traditions of a Navy football game as well as showcase their talent in front of approximately 34,000 fans! Awesome job LHS dance team! And look out for the next performance on January 5th at the Washington Wizards halftime show.

The LHS ROSE Players is proud to announce its Spring Musical for the 2024-2025 school year! The spring musical will be Disney's High School Musical - On Stage!

If you would like to review the script, please contact Mr. Barbato at gjbarbato@smcps.org. He will assist you in scheduling a time during normal school hours (8:00 am - 3:15 pm) to come in and read the script. After reading the script, if you have any thoughts or comments, you will be able to complete the community feedback form. Please note that, due to copyright restrictions, we cannot allow scripts to be removed from our school building. The script and feedback form for the play will be available through December 13.

Interested in joining the Wellness Club? Keep an eye out for information about meeting days, times, and room number! The Wellness Club will include activities like yoga and walking and provide helpful nutrition information. More information to be released soon!

MTSS stands for Multi-tiered Systems of Support which promotes school improvement through engaging, research based academic and behavioral strategies/practices. LHS is a Tier I and II school. We are focused on positive behavior and community engagement. Our acronym to teach and exhibit positive behaviors is STRONG.

A representative from CSM will present information about dual enrollment math classes during A and B lunches on November 22, 2024. The presentation will be in the Auditorium, and any interested student may attend.

Need to study during lunch? Sign up for the media center for A Or B lunch By clicking on this link. Save it to your computer to sign up each day for a scholarly opportunity to get work done. You can always visit https://elibrary.smcps.org for resources.

We welcome you to incorporate physical activity into your day and join us in the gym for lunch. Completion of this form is a requirement for gym entry. Students are permitted to sign up for only one lunch block (either A or B). Students are expected to enter the gym through the side door adjacent to the girls locker room and be in the gym before the 10 minute bell. Students unlawfully tardy will be redirected to the cafeteria. Students are expected to remain in the gym, omit food or drink and have tennis shoes to be on the gym surface. Parents who are dropping students off at school in the morning should use the parking lot lane closest to the building. Please do not park in in a space and wait to drop your student off. Unfortunately, parking is very limited for both students and staff. Utilizing extra parking spaces for this purpose can create an issue where there is nowhere for staff or student drivers to park. Additionally, please do not drive down the middle parking lot lane in order to drop a student at school. We appreciate your help!

Students, please make sure your laptop is charged each day. Bring your charger to school in case your battery runs out.

Need to purchase a laptop charger?

You can do one of two things:

1. Go the the Media Center in your School. They can assess you a fine so that you can pay using My School Bucks.
2. Go directly to the DELL store. You can purchase directly from their website and have it shipped to your home.

Parents, if your student is new to LHS and you still do not have access to Schoology, please contact Ms. Smith (krsmith@smcps.org).

Please remember that the Cell phone policy also applies to early release students inside the building after their school day ends. Phones are only permitted to be used during lunch and after 2:45.

Due to safety concerns and the demands on the main office, we do not accept food deliveries of any kind. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Bus passes should only be requested when students have a change in physical address or when there is an emergency situation and a student needs to ride a different bus or get off at a different stop. Bus passes will not be granted for students simply wanting to go visit with a friend.

Need to obtain a bus pass?

Visit this site to submit a request electronically, or parents can write a note or send an email to Mrs. Dornisch at eadornisch@smcps.org. All relevant information must be included in the written request.

Bus Information includes: Student name, address, parent phone number, existing bus stop to be used, bus #, date, medical concerns, destination address, destination phone # and reason for the pass.
