Your Bridge to Academic Success!
Updates from the Dean of the DML
Dear Valued Library Users,
As we embrace the season of renewal and growth, Spring brings with it both challenges and opportunities for transformation. Amidst the blossoming flowers and warming days, we find ourselves navigating a time of change and adaptation.
Unfortunately, we must share some challenging news. Due to staffing vacancies, we are currently unable to process borrowing requests from other libraries, resulting in the temporary suspension of new requests via our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. We understand the impact this may have on your research needs and apologize for any inconvenience caused. However, we remain committed to providing alternative resources and support. Please reach out to our Research Help Service to discuss alternative resources or means of access.
On a brighter note, we are pleased to focus on our students and how we can look to a future with the potential to provide new opportunities to support them both academically and socially in the presence of peers who are focused on their studies.
The Dayton Memorial Library is participating in Regis Gives Day this year, a two-day event on April 16th and 17th, to support a diverse range of initiatives and programs that have a lasting impact on our students and the communities they serve. The "Building Belonging: A Library Coffee Shop" project aims to kick off the transformation of the Dayton Memorial Library into an even more vibrant socio-academic hub. There is a sea change happening in Regis enrollment. Approximately 40% of incoming traditional students for Fall 2023 live at home with their families. For many, their lives are rooted in their family’s community and responsibilities first. We will also see an increase in international and post-traditional students, many of whom may also have commitments that keep them focused on academics rather than campus social activities.
A library coffee shop is an environment where students can be focused on academics while providing opportunities for social engagement, such as while studying over a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate by the library fireplace, or reserving a space with an affinity group for group-study sessions. A library coffee shop can also serve as an anchor for engaging the broader Regis community so the on- and off-campus community can come together and share ideas or resources, work on projects, or have fun.
If a coffee shop in the Library sounds like a good idea for you, your, students, or your family members, I urge you to consider supporting this project on Regis Gives day by following this link https://www.givecampus.com/w9buvj
As we navigate this season of change, let us approach each challenge with resilience and hope while embracing the opportunities for growth that Spring can bring.
All the best in this season of change,
Dan Lawrence

Hello! We are the Queer Student Alliance (QSA). Every year, we host a Drag Show as a way to bring the Regis community together, including Queer folks and allies. Currently we are looking for participants in the show on a volunteer basis. We are specifically looking for Drag performers, but we also have positions open in tech, hair and makeup crew, as well as helpers backstage to help keep performers organized! These positions are open to undergrad and grad students, Regis faculty, and Regis Alumni.
The show will be on April 12th from 7-9pm, and we are planning on providing support or workshops for performers. We have attached a form that allows you to sign up for any of these positions. Click the photo or below link for the Drag Show Interest form!
Take a Study Paws!
The library is teaming up with Denver Pet Partners and we will have therapy animals in the library available for love and pets April 24th from 11-1pm. In addition to animals, we will have several activities and spaces open for you to de-stress and take a break with throughout the week prior to exams: A Board of Encouragement, Snack Station and Adult Coloring.
New Employee Highlight - Welcome Stacy!

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and being part of the DML team!
Get to Know Poet and Colorado Women's Hall of Fame Inductee: Laura Hershey
Hello, My name is Grace Herbison. I work in the Student Disability Services office here at Regis. The celebration of Women’s History Month last month & National Poetry Month this month has me thinking about my friend Laura Hershey who I got to know as her personal attendant in my twenties. She was a phenomenal woman, a nationally recognized poet and activist. She fought for civil rights of people with disabilities and the gay community. I want to share her story with everyone because it is beautiful, because I miss her, and because it is an important part of Colorado women’s history.
Please take the time to learn more about this wonderful woman below and on The Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame webpage. https://www.cogreatwomen.org/project/laura-ann-hershey/

Laura Hershey is in the middle front row and is wearing a white patterned skirt, a turquoise top, and a nasal ventilator tube. There are three women including me, Grace Herbison, standing in the row behind Laura and friends.

Protesting lack of access to United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China
Laura became very active in groups like ADAPT as the ADA came under constant attack. Her focus was not just on protecting civil rights, but on empowering people whose rights were threatened. She began protesting the very telethon for which she had been a poster child and demanded that people with disabilities be seen as full citizens with rights, rather than people who should be pitied. Laura became recognized around the world for trying to make people's lives better.

Ken Phillips - Final month in the DML Gallery!
Last Month to enjoy the beautiful artwork in the Dayton Memorial Library fireside gallery! Works in this current show by Ken Phillips are a visual meditation on the story of Creation as told in the Book of Genesis. These colorful fabric hangings include border work of words in Phillips' characteristic script. They poetically embrace the days of Creation and imaginatively expand on what is outlined in the Bible text.
Phillips is a former 34-year employee of Regis University and a current volunteer in the Office of Mission. He received his bachelors from Siena Heights University in Michigan and, after five years of teaching, his MFA in printmaking and ceramics from Bowling Green State University, Ohio.
The medium of fabric has been part of his creative life since high school, but it was launched in earnest with his move to Colorado, in part due to studio unavailability, but as well due to his abiding love for fabric and celebrational hangings. He also has had multiple one-person shows in Denver and has provided fabric art for decades of Regis liturgical celebrations, various churches in Denver, and varied conferences and events throughout Colorado.
