Dear Families,

We have had a great first few weeks of school! The students have done a nice job settling into the routines. We have continued to build community within our classrooms through morning circles and SEL instruction. Please ask your child about the various circle questions they have had this week!

We are seeking a part-time monitor to work 3 days a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, to support our students during lunch and recess. Lunch and Recess Monitors support and assist students and paraeducators during multiple lunch and recess shifts. Below, please find some details regarding the position of Lunch and Recess Monitor.

• Lunch and Recess Monitors are considered temporary HCPSS employees
• Lunch and Recess hours are 11:10 AM - 2:10 PM each day
• Compensation is $15.00 per hour

HCPSS parents/guardians are invited to take part in this free, virtual workshop, part of a monthly workshop series that will delve into the challenges of parenthood and offer techniques to help navigate those challenges.

Each year, families update/complete their child's Family File with all emergency information. Please complete this info ASAP so that we have updated information in case of emergency.

Starting next week, students in grades 1-5 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The MAP window runs through October 17th. The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure your student’s academic progress. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. HCPSS parents, guardians and family members are invited to join HCPSS Superintendent Willliam J. Barnes, school system leaders and community organizations for this valuable information night to prepare for a successful academic year. The event will also feature various workshop topics which provide access to resources and support.

The 2024-2025 Parent Academy Kick-Off will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6-8:30 p.m at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia. Dinner will be provided from 5:15-6 p.m. Registration is encouraged.

As part of the HCPSS strategic planning process, 5th grade students, staff and families are being

asked to provide input about their values for our school system. Parents/Guardians: Please complete this HCPSS Strategic Planning Input Survey by 9/20/2024 and share the student version with your Grade 5-12 student(s).

This survey is anonymous and available in multiple languages. If you have students at more than one

school, please complete the survey one time, and indicate each school your students attend.

The CA (Columbia Association) Points Program is offered to students in grades 3-12 enrolled in the Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS) program at participating schools. Students can earn a free CA membership for themselves and their immediate family through their grades and attendance.

To enroll your student, please complete the CA Points Enrollment Form. Online enrollment will close on Friday, September 27, 2024.

The HCPSS participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Students from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. Qualification is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential. All children in households receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can get free meals regardless of income, and students from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. Those eligible for Free and Reduced Meals receive both breakfast and lunch for free.

Parents/guardians must submit a new application every school year to maintain their student’s eligibility. Click the button below to apply.

There is no limit to the number of a la carte items a student can buy. Parents are encouraged to discuss acceptable a la carte purchasing for their children, and parents have the right to restrict a la carte purchasing for their students. Parents may contact the Food and Nutrition Service office at 410-313-6738 or 410-313-6744 to add restrictions to their child's meal account, including placing a limit or blocking the student's account for a la carte items.

Research shows that 90% of brain growth happens by age five. The Basics provide five simple things parents can do to make the most of these early years. Parents in Howard County can receive free tips directly to their phone to support their child by signing up for Basics Insights. These weekly text messages provide suggestions based on your child’s developmental stage, from birth to age five (available in English or Spanish).

Howard County Parent Pages Newsletter

Sign up for the Parent Pages, a newsletter published by the Howard County Office of Children and Families for parents, caregivers and agencies working with families. Each monthly issue features information to help parents and caregivers learn how to promote positive parenting for children’s development. It highlights workshops, local resources, events, parenting information, and agency programs targeted to help families grow and thrive in Howard County. This newsletter is a part of the Howard County Family Institute, an education, information and community outreach program.

Health Services information can be found online and will be continually updated. All students, staff and visitors should perform daily health checks and may not enter an HCPSS bus or building if they exhibit any signs of a communicable disease. Details, including infection control protocols for communicable diseases like COVID-19, are available online.

The Howard County Public School System is partnering with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention to bring flu immunizations into our schools for students. This year, they will also be offering the latest Covid vaccine if it is available at the time of the clinics. The clinic at Clemens Crossing Elementary will be held on Wednesday, October 16th during school hours. If you would like your child to be vaccinated against the flu and/or Covid at this clinic, please register at this link: https://www.marylandvax.org/appointment/en/reg/9010256127 prior to October 9th. You are not required to provide your child’s insurance information. If you have any concerns about the new Covid vaccine, speak with your child’s pediatrician. If you wish to cancel your child’s appointment after they've been registered, please call Ms. Schrumm, School Nurse at 410-313-5609.

The Howard County Health Department is hosting several flu vaccine clinics around the county for those with or without health insurance. They are offering both the regular dose for ages 6-months and older, as well as the high dose for 65-years and older.

Some students are bringing cough drops to school. Cough drops without medication in them are considered a non-medication. Non-medications may be administered at school with parent permission to administer and specific instructions for administration in writing. The instructions should include the name of the product, reason for administration, amount and frequency of administration. Products must be provided by the parent/guardian and in some cases, are stored in the health room. The Nurse must be notified before administering a non-medication the first time at school.

Cough drops (pectin based and menthol) may be self-carried by the student or kept in their backpack if the student is responsible enough not to share them with others and the teacher agrees. Administration should be limited to no more than 3 cough drops per day (every two hours) for no longer than 5 school days.

Cough drops that contain additional medications (Robitussin with dextromethorphan and Cepacol with benzacaine) require a prescriber’s order and must be kept in the Health Room. Thank you.

Your $15 membership goes a long way to help us run programs like the Science Fair, International Night, Talent Show, Trunk or Treat, the Book Fair, Holiday Shop and so much more. iCook Flour Power 🍰 🍮 In this baking course, our chefs-in-training will learn how to make delicious and nutritious desserts. We will explore ingredients familiar and new to bake savory and sweet dishes. Students will make Key Lime Pie, Little Orange Cakes, Avocado Brownies, and so much more! Foundational cooking skills will be taught, including proper techniques for measuring, mixing, slicing, dicing, and of course, kitchen safety! We hope to see you in the kitchen soon.

KidzArt is a FUN, art-enrichment program designed to enhance drawing skills and build each child’s confidence. By using our simple drawing method and specialized format, students will learn to focus, relax and think creatively. Our Certified Instructors help students create original works of art, take risks and think outside of the box. Within each session, students will explore a variety of artist grade materials, such as oil and chalk pastels, watercolor, charcoal, clay, copper, textured papers and much more. Younger children practice following directions and using fine motor skills. Older children love having the creative freedom and guidance to further their skills. KidzArtists will bring home a new masterpiece each week with a kid-tested and educationally rich curriculum that NEVER REPEATS!

My name is Matthew Aubin, I am the head of the Wilde Lake women's soccer program.
