Save The Endangered Gorillas
Virunga Mountain Gorillas Need Help
Tommy M.
What’s the Gorilla Problem?
Mountain gorillas are endangered for many reasons. Poachers are killing gorillas for their meat. Gorillas are getting sick from human illnesses and do not have the immune system to fight it, so they die. More humans are moving into gorilla habitats, and the gorillas can’t live there anymore, so they are dying. Climate change is slowly killing all the gorillas, too. The gorillas are dying, and we need to stop it.

Why Should We Save the Gorillas?
If humans don’t start to help gorillas, they could die out. If the mountain gorillas become extinct, the whole environment could suffer. Humans use resources from the forest, and finding these resources without gorillas would be hard. Gorillas are an important part of the food chain for plants, animals, and even people. If adult gorillas are killed, the babies are helpless and may die. Without gorillas, the whole ecosystem would be damaged.

Who is Helping the Gorillas?
The gorillas are not dying quite as much as they used to, because some organizations have started to protect them. Virunga National Park has park rangers who protect the forest from poachers. They also take care of orphaned baby gorillas. The World Wildlife Fund started the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) which protects gorillas and teaches humans to live nearby without destroying the gorillas' homes. There are people working to keep gorillas alive, but they are still endangered.

What Can We Do to Help the Gorillas?
There are many things people could do to help gorillas. Humans could help the gorillas by staying out of their habitats and not cutting down all the trees. They should also be aware of the problem and try to protect the gorillas from poachers. You can donate to organizations like Virunga National Park or adopt a gorilla. If everyone does these things, gorillas could be saved.
