Columbus Africentric Prek - 5
September 2024
Principal Turner's Corner
The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priorities. This year, we have implemented additional measures to ensure that our school remains a safe and welcoming space for all. Remember, your well-being is essential to your success, so never hesitate to reach out for support when needed.
As a reminder: All PreK - 5 students must wear purple polo shirts and khaki bottoms. Students are not permitted to wear jackets, hoodies or coats in the building throughout the school year. Students are not permitted to carry purses, fanny packs, and or cell phones on their persons. These items will need to be put in their cubbies or lockers (5th graders). Student can wear long sleeve purple polo shirts, but they cannot wear long sleeve shirts under their short sleeve purple polo shirts (unless it is purple).
Our Open House held on October 19th was a huge success! Parents and families, thank you for all of your support. We couldn't do this without you. It takes a strong relationship between school and home to create a place where students, teachers, and families feel valued, safe, and genuinely cared for.

Bus Safety
Students were given the proper procedure for entering an exiting a school bus. They also learned the following rules below.
- Wait 10 feet away from the curb in a safe place away from the street. The bus driver can't see children if they're too close to the bus. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop.
- When you get on or off the bus, look to make sure the bus safety lights are flashing.
- Wait to get on the bus until the bus driver says it's safe.
- Be respectful of the bus driver and follow their directions.
- Remain seated while riding the bus.
- If something falls under the bus, tell the bus driver. Don't try to pick it up yourself.
- Stop and look both ways as you get off the bus.
- When the bus driver says it's safe to cross the street after getting off the bus, remember to cross in front of the bus and make eye contact with the driver. Never cross behind the bus because the driver won't be able to see you.
RACES
Hello! I am Mama Johnson, Reading Specialist and proud Nubian!💜
Our school has decided on using this strategy to ensure that students become better writers.
RACES or RACE Constructed Response is the writing strategy used to structure students’ responses, and ensure they are not only restating and answering the question asked, but also citing text evidence and explaining the evidence chosen, IN THEIR OWN WORDS.

Recipe of the Month
Harvest Salad
INGREDIENTS
For the salad:
- 1 small butternut squash peeled, seeded, and diced
- ½ tablespoon olive oil
- salt and freshly ground pepper
- ⅔ cup (120 g) raw quinoa
- 1 cup (240 ml) water
- 2 cups (130 g) chopped kale leaves
- 2 small apples cored and sliced or diced
Toppings:
- ¼ cup (30 g) dried cranberries
- ¼ cup (30 g) pecans roughly chopped
- ⅓ cup (50 g) crumbled feta cheese I used reduced-fat
- 1 ½ tablespoon roasted pumpkin seeds
For the apple cider vinaigrette:
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- ¾ tablespoon honey or maple syrup
- 1 ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 garlic clove minced
- salt and ground black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
Roast the butternut
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
On a baking sheet, toss together the butternut squash, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Transfer to the oven and roast for 16 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until the squash is tender.
Remove it from the oven and let it cool completely.
Cook the quinoa
Rinse and drain the quinoa. In a small saucepan, combine the quinoa and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, uncovered.
Reduce heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the quinoa is light and fluffy and all the water is absorbed.
Make the dressing
Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl (or shake them together in a mason jar) until combined.
Taste and adjust the salt and pepper.
Massage the kale
Place the kale in a large bowl and pour half of the vinaigrette over the top. Use your hands to gently massage the dressing into the kale for about 30 seconds until it softens.
Assemble the salad
Add the quinoa, roasted butternut, and apples to the bowl with the kale and toss to combine.
Divide the salad between 3 plates, then top with the chopped pecans, toasted pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and crumbled feta cheese. Drizzle the remaining vinaigrette over the top, and serve.
NOTES
- Servings: This recipe yields about 3 servings as a filling lunch or dinner. Adjust ingredients as needed for more or fewer people.
- Butternut squash:Use pre-cut butternut squash to save time.
- Apples: Use a crunchy apple, chopped or sliced. Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Fuji, and Jazz apples work well.
- Make it vegan/dairy-free: Omit the cheese and and sprinkle with nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor.
- Add proteins: Toss in some chickpeas, leftover shredded chicken, sliced steak, or cubed tofu.
- Leftovers: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Make Ahead: Prepare the vinaigrette and quinoa 2-3 days in advance and store them separately in the fridge. Shake the vinaigrette well before using. Add the apples and toppings just before serving to maintain their crispness.
