Black History is American History.
Black History Month can serve as an opportunity to teach with intention honoring the tradition and importance of Black history and culture. Social and emotional practices can help to teach a more inclusive narrative about the contributions of Black Americans in this country. When reflecting on contributions, experiences and achievements without ignoring painful truths it can be helpful to:
- Examine the leadership principles that helped drive influential movements that led to change.
- Practicing active listening skills and gather feedback.
- Be responsive to student's feelings - and our own - about historical events.
- Activate relationship-focused skills, like empathy, to build trust.
- Utilize strengths to problem solve and work towards equitable outcomes for all.
- Include Black experiences and events that center joy, inspiration, hope and celebration.
