Family Newsletter
Cleveland STEM High School
October 27, 2023
Hello Cleveland Families,
This week, all of our student's learned about post-secondary life through DIscoverU week, which was highlighted by an all-day experience on Wednesday where students checked out a college fair, heard from CHS alumni about their college experience, learned critical information about how to pay for college, met some connections to community service and local job opportunities, and a lot more. Please be sure to ask your student about what they learned this past week, and invite them to fill out this student feedback survey so that we can learn how we can improve the experience next year!
In the coming weeks, you will hear from your student's advisory teacher to schedule their Student-Led Conference. Through SLC's, we want students to articulate their hopes for the future and identify immediate goals that they can work on right now to set them up to reach their goals During this time, you'll hear what your student's post-secondary plans and how they are doing in school, today.
You will hear from your student's advisory teacher soon to schedule this time, and you can choose to have your SLC virtually or in person.
We hope you have a restful and restorative weekend!

Important Info to Know
Halloween costumes
Students are welcome to wear their costumes to school on Halloween! Here are some important guidelines to consider:
- Costumes cannot include accessories that appear to be a weapon of any kind
- No masks or costumes that cover the entire face
- No cultural appropriation (you can learn more about what this means, here).
Student climate surveys THIS WEEK
Students will be taking the Student Climate Survey in their math classes next week and it is absolutely essential that we hear from all students on this survey. Please let your student know that this will be happening in math this week and that we value their voice. This survey will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of each of our students’ experiences at school and will be used to make decisions about how we will improve the school experience for our students.
Scholar Saturday is 11/4 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
We will open our doors for students on November 4, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. As we transition to Quarter 2, we invite any student who is looking for additional support to join us for as much or as little of the morning as they need. We will share more information about which teachers will be present to provide support this week. Breakfast will be provided.
Seattle Promise!
Did you know that all Seattle Public Schools students have access to free college after they graduate from High School? We strongly advise all students to apply for Seattle Promise so that they have the option of going to college for free when they graduate, regardless of their hops at this time.
Seattle Promise will be hosting interpreted application workshops starting in November! The six languages the workshops will be held in are: Amharic, Cantonese, Somali, Spanish, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese. During the workshop students will be able to complete the Seattle Promise and Seattle Colleges applications and learn more about the next steps in the scholarship process. I've listed the dates and times for the workshops below and have also attached interpreted flyers that you can share with your students.
- Amharic: Wednesday, November 8th, 5:30-7:30pm
- Cantonese: Thursday, November 9th, 5:30-7:30pm
- Somali: Monday, November 13th, 5:30-7:30pm
- Spanish: Tuesday, November 14th, 5:30-7:30pm
- Vietnamese: Wednesday, November 15th, 5:30-7:30pm
- Tigrinya: Thursday, November 16th, 5:30-7:30pm

Math CASH (Cleveland After School Help)
Math CASH (Cleveland After School Help) is available after school in 2254 (Shirude’s room). This is a 1 hour opportunity for students to receive math support, homework help, quiz prep and retakes with math teacher(s), and Angel the math tutor. Snacks are available for students and students do not have to stay until 4:45, if they want/need to leave earlier they can! We take attendance, so we can let families know if their students come to CASH throughout the year.
