Spring Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences are on Friday, March 24, 2023. Conferences will be held both in-person and virtually, using either Google Meet or a phone call. We will be utilizing an electronic sign-up system from PTC Fast for all conferences.

Teachers are reaching out to families this week and next week. Thursday, March 16 an email communication will go out to families with instructions on how to sign up for a conference.

Our school is taking part in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey on a rescheduled date for Tuesday, March 14th. This will be held during an extended block 3/4 (there will be no FLEX that day). The YRBS was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and the Agency of Education. The YRBS has been administered every other year in Vermont since 1993. Separate versions of the survey ask middle or high school students about health behaviors and assets or protective factors. Topics include personal safety and injury prevention, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, substance use, and protective factors.

Results from the YRBS help us determine the extent to which adolescents engage in or experience health-risk behaviors. The results from the YRBS support public health officials, educators, and community organizations' ability to assess and improve efforts to reduce health risk behaviors among adolescents throughout the state and nation. They help us develop and evaluate health-related programs and secure their future funding.

Next Friday, March 17th will be an A day. This is due to the amount of A days missed from snow days.

EHS Theater presents Grimm Nightmare, a dark Brothers Grimm Fairytale adaptation.

Green Mountain Boys' State (GMBS) is sponsored by the American Legion of Vermont. The program will be held at Norwich University from Sunday, June 25th-Friday, June 30th. Each school across the state has a predetermined designated number of delegate slots available.

Essex has 10 slots that would be endorsed and paid for by your local American Legion Post. You do not need to have a family member who is currently a member to apply. Simply put, if you're interested in working with other rising seniors across the Green Mountain State and developing some leadership skills, this is for you. If you're interested in attending post high school education, military or the workplace, this is for you. If you are interested in scholarship money to assist you in your future decisions, this is for you. If you are looking to hear from leaders across the state on how you too can become a stronger leader, this is for you.

If you'd like to attend, please complete the application form below. There will be follow-up conversations between GMBS and your school staff prior to making selections. GMBS will promptly follow up with you with additional information once you are accepted.

High school students, who have completed their junior year, are eligible to apply to become an ALA Girls State program participant. ALA Girls State participants spend an intensive week of study, working together as self-governing citizens and learning how to participate in the functioning of Vermont’s local and state government in preparation for their future roles as responsible adult citizens. Participants spend time campaigning for local and statewide office, writing bills, and passing resolutions. Girls also have other ways to be engaged and fully participating citizens of their independent “Girls State.” Then they get to put what they have learned to use when they attend a mock-government session at the Vermont State House as part of their ALA Girls State experience.

Student learn how to campaign and run for office at the Local, State, and Federal government levels. They also go to Montpelier during their stay, to shadow our representatives there.

The session this year begins on June 17th and ends on June 22nd. It is fully paid for by the Auxiliary!

The application says due March 10th but the date is extended to March 18th and will do the interviews on that date at the American Legion, 3650 Roosevelt Highway in Colchester.

Register today for College & Career Pathways 2023 taking place on the morning of Saturday, March 18th.

You're invited to join VSAC for this free, postsecondary planning event. Live workshops will be offered in person at UVM or online via Zoom. Workshop topics will cover financial aid, admissions, searching for colleges, career exploration, and much more!

If you're able to attend in person, the day will kick off with a resource fair featuring Vermont institutions, organizations, and businesses to help you explore your future after high school. Find all the details at vsac.org/ccp.

Dr. Alice Angney Scholarship for Leadership and Service

The Vermont Superintendents Association has established a student scholarship to honor former long-time Lamoille South Supervisory Union Superintendent, Dr. Alice Angney. The scholarship commemorates Dr. Angney’s outstanding service to public education and children in Vermont by providing a $3,000 scholarship to a Vermont high school senior. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of the student's leadership, service to his/her/their community, academic achievement, and initiative in overcoming a specific challenge.

Information and forms for the annual scholarship will be posted on February 1st of each year.

The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont offers a variety of intensive, residential summer learning programs hosted at college campuses all over the state. Each Institute focuses on a unique area of interest and introduces you to mentors and friends who will help you pursue your passions and create your future. These programs are open to students in grades 9, 10 or 11. Institutes this summer are:

12th -Grade Students and Families. Please look at this section for information and updates throughout the year.

• Honor’s Night: May 24th at 7pm in the EHS Auditorium. Invitations to those students being recognized will be mailed in early May.

• Prom: May 20th at the Hampton Inn in Colchester 8 pm-11:00 pm.

• Graduation will be held at Essex High School Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 am. The current plan calls for a return to an indoor ceremony. After the ceremony families will be encouraged to gather and take photos outdoors.

• Cap and gown ordering through Balfour is now closed. If you didn’t order a cap and gown, there will be extras available at the pick-up dates.

• Cap and gown pick-up dates are:

• June 1st, 10:00 am-1:30 pm in the gym.

• June 7th during lunches outside the cafe.

• Payment is due at pick up of the cap and gown and the price is $25. Cash or check made out to Balfour.

• Any students wanting to order custom graduation announcements should go to www.balfour.com.
• Yearbook is no longer accepting senior photos.
• Yearbooks can be purchased through Jostens here.
