October Newsletter
Message from the Principal
Hello Dragon Families,
We have officially wrapped up the first quarter and we are now onto the second quarter of the year. In reflecting on the first quarter we have had some amazing wins. We started off the year strong with an amazing turn out for meet the teacher, had a successful open house, and as we have continued through the quarter our students who take the benchmark in grades 3rd-5th, have done an amazing job.
We hope to keep up the great momentum we built in the first quarter and bring that same energy to quarter two! One of our goals as a school is to continue growth in our ELA proficiency and we will continue to work towards that goal this quarter. We have some updates and important information to check out such as our first school event happening this month, so please be sure to read through this newsletter in its entirety.
I hope you all had a fun and restful fall break and we look forward to an amazing month of learning and fall festivities!
Mr. Brady- Principal

Halloween and Costume Policies
Rules for Costumes at School
Students are more than welcome to wear their costumes to school on Halloween, but please keep the following in mind...
- You send your child to school in their costume at your own risk. Oyama is not responsible for any damage that may occur to a students costume. If you are concerned about your child's halloween items getting potentially lost or damaged please do not send them.
- Students may not bring any simulated weapons to school, this includes but is not limited to...
- Fake Swords, Knives, or Blades
- Fake guns, squirt guns, BB guns, airsoft or pellet guns, or orbi guns
- Any large objects of weapon like nature- Scythes, Axes, etc.
- Fake Blood
- Students costumes must be school appropriate. Costumes may not have excessive fake blood, inappropriate language or insinuations, or represent inappropriate jokes/humor.
- Students must be identifiable and masks will not be allowed.
We highly encourage you to send your child with a back up set of clothes in the event that something happens to their costume or they cannot participate in the school activities fully due to the costume.
No Candy on Campus
Please remember that gum and candy are not allowed at school with the exception of items bought afterschool at the snack cart. Halloween candy is not allowed to be brought to school or be placed in lunch boxes.
Cell Phones
Oyama does not allow the use of cell phones during the school day. If your child has a cell phone, they MUST keep it in their backpack until they leave campus. If you should need to contact your child during the school day for any reason, please call our front office at 520-225-5700. The below TUSD Governing Board Policy will be enforced at Oyama.
Character Trait of the Month
This month, we’re focusing on the character trait of responsibility. We’ll be emphasizing how important it is to show responsibility. Throughout September, students will be recognized for demonstrating responsible behavior in and out of the classroom. Encourage your child to share what they’ve learned about responsibility with you at home!
Students who exhibit traits of responsibility and show it towards others have the chance to earn dragon tickets for their classes. The classes with the most dragon tickets can win awesome prizes!
Reading at Home
We cannot stress enough the power and importance of reading at home with your student. Taking the time to read at home even just 5 minutes a day can make substantial improvements in your child's reading ability.
Upcoming Improvements to Playground
A huge thank you to our Social Worker, Marissa Herington (Ms. M) for Oyama recieving an amazing and generous donation brought to us by the Salpointe Girl's Basketball Team and Salpointe Staff! Salpointe Women’s basketball program participated in a sports exchange program in Armenia this summer. Through this exchange, they learned how participating in sports connects us and its importance in the lives of our youth. They were also given the opportunity to give back to the Oyama community through grant money given to them by PH International.
Ms. M and the Salpointe team will be facilitating a clean-up and clinic for the students of Oyama. the clean up and donations will include the following...
- Decorate and replace rocks for the boundary/retaining wall
- Clean and re-paint lines for basketball/volleyball court
- Add basketball nets
- Add soccer nets (x4) and volleyball nets to playground
- New basketballs for student use
That's not all! Ms. M. and the Salpointe team will be hosting a clinic for students. The clinic will teach students the foundations for the sports we are receiving equipment for, and afterwards there will be Pizza and Eegees.
Date: October 29th
Clinic: 4:00pm-5:30pm
Food: 5:30-6:00pm
More details about the clinic and how to RSVP will be sent out via class dojo by Ms. M in the coming week. Stay tuned!
