We are now finishing our fifth week at Kaikōura Suburban School for 2022.
It is also my first five weeks as your Principal, as such I would like to share with you what I have noticed; I have noticed that our tamariki well and truly, live up to our Fyfe Force values and aspire to their highest aspirations. The most beautiful quality that I have noticed is that the children are great at lifting one another up. On so many occasions when I am fortunate enough to be in the classroom or out in our marvelous playground I see our children supporting and caring for each other. The story I tell myself about Kaikōura Suburban is this is a community that cares about one another and ultimately that sums up the FORCE. It feels great to have the privilege of being part of such a caring community. In an absolutely beautiful environment.
Annie and I have the pleasure of receiving communications from yourselves and from the wider community, for a variety of different things. Recently we received an email from Tom Robertson, his mum's name was Melba Boyd, a member of the Boyd family in our community. He shared with us an award she received at Kaikōura Suburban School dated 1935 for Reading and Number work. Accompanying this award is a book that she received as well. This is another example of the history of community that is the foundation for kindness, pride and caring that is evident in our children.
Given the changing landscape with Covid 19 and the phases of the traffic light system, I want to acknowledge and thank you all for being so understanding of the constant change that we are working with and especially the limitations that the red light circumstances have presented us with. However, because we are a small school we have had the benefit of being able to move into one school bubble this week. Which has meant we have had external providers come into our school and deliver learning programs.
This week we had John Orchard bring in his amazing resources. He played old games with our tamariki and told stories about some of Kaikōura’s histories. This was our first L4L ignition day for learning about what enterprise is and to ignite curious questions for L4L projects. From this day there will be sparks of ideas that our tamiriki will be developing in the coming weeks. I am looking forward to celebrating the projects with you.
We also have Sea Week next week, the opening of Kaikōura Sea Week begins tomorrow at South Bay. Included in the schedule of events are snorkeling, equipment provided by Dave's Dive Shop, a series of sea themed documentaries and movies, at the Mayfair, kayaking and paddling boarding, beach clean up with dolphin shortbread and so much more.

We also have Top Team sports day on Thursday provided by Sport Tasman. We are looking forward to this.
Our Fyfe Force year six leaders have been working on their leadership speeches. We are creating a virtualised leadership assembly so that we can share with you, our community, our whānau, the celebration of our children becoming leaders.
