From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
This weekend, 24 families are heading to Caddo Lake in east Texas for Family Camp. Please join us in praying they have safe travels and make lots of great memories!
It’s been a tragic and terrible couple of weeks on the eastern seaboard. As communities continue to clean up from Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton has just ravaged Florida for the second time in as many weeks. We are partnering with three districts that are part of our church body, the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, to provide desperately needed relief dollars to all areas affected by these monster storms. As we did last weekend, after both services, you'll have an opportunity to give to hurricane victims in a door offering. You can also give online here.
Speaking of giving, mark your calendars for Commitment Sunday, which is next Sunday, October 20. This is the Sunday when we, as a family of faith, pledge what we intend to give to Zion for the coming year. If you have not already, you should receive a letter from your pastors with more details about Commitment Sunday. Next Sunday is also our blood drive from 9 am to 1 pm by the gym, followed by our voters’ meeting at 1 pm in the worship center. Join us for what will be a big Sunday at Zion!
In worship, continue our series “Give | Save | Live” where we’re looking at what God has to say about our finances. This weekend, we’ll look at the value of saving in a story from Jesus’ life in Luke 12:13-21:
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then He said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” And He told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
The rich man in Jesus’ story makes a tragic mistake in how he saves. Learn how to avoid his mistake and save faithfully and wisely this Sunday in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!
– Pastor Zach, Pastor Kevin & Pastor Kyle

Note that the Church Office will be closed on Monday, October 14 for the Columbus Day holiday.
Sanctuary Bible Class Sunday, October 20—Dr. Jerry Kieschnick
Topic: Seven Myths of Estate Planning and what the Bible has to say about some of these myths.
Myth #1:
“I’m not wealthy enough to consider planned giving.”
Myth #2:
“Our estate plan was completed thirty years ago so we should be OK.”
Myth #3:
“I’m too young to think or talk about death and dying. Maybe I’ll be ready for that someday but not right now.”
Myth #4:
“If I don’t have a will, my family will be able to figure it out.”
Myth #5:
“Charitable estate planning advisors only want me to include the church in my plan, not my family.”
Myth #6:
“No need to make a list of what I own. My family will be able to find it all.”
Myth #7:
“It’s too depressing to make plans for my funeral service. I’ll let my kids make those decisions.”

Iron Sharpens Iron
November 10th, 5:30-7:30pm Zion Worship Center
Men- the simple Bible verse of John 20:21 says "Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” Have you felt the tug to tell someone about Jesus or have examples/stories you would like to share in addition to learning more about sharing your faith?
The next Iron Sharpens Iron will focus on examples and stories of sharing your faith as well as how to grow in sharing your faith. Pastor Zach will be our moderator and teacher in helping us learn and grow in this aspect of our walk with Jesus!
We invite you to (anonymously) submit stories and examples of sharing your faith, along with questions you may have about sharing your faith to the email zionwalburg.isi@gmail.com . These questions and stories will be shared/discussed on that evening as information for us to grow and learn about sharing our faith!
We look forward to seeing you there! As always, there will be a free meal and time to get to know each other!

Church Worker Appreciation Month
Dear Zion congregation,
October is Church Worker Appreciation Month. We want to encourage members to show their appreciation to church workers personally. Please be encouraged to show them your appreciation. These are a few easy to show your appreciation:
-write them a letter of encouragement
-make their family time essential in the church schedule
-cook them food or bake a dessert
-purchase a gift card
-take their family our to eat
-watch their kids for a day
Thank you for your consideration,
President Newman and TX District LCMS

THE JOY OF GIVING
"Practice Gratitude and Pursue Peace"
A "Thank you" a day keeps the doctor away? Science tells us it's possible. According to a number of studies conducted in recent years, the practice of gratitude has a positive effect on our mental and physical well-being, including better sleep, mood, and immunity, as well as decreased depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and blood pressure.
That's good news as we head into a season focused on giving thanks. But challenging things accompany this season too. As we gather with friends and family, particularly in the wake of a fraught political season, passions run deep, emotions run strong, and common ground often feels shaky. Practicing gratitude together may just be the antidote for hard feelings and harsh words, living out this guidance from the Apostle Paul: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (I Thessalonians 5:16-18). Here's how you can give thanks and pursue peace in the next few months:
REMEMBER GOD'S GOODNESS: Take time to recall shared stories and memories, ways God has shown His faithfulness, and answers to prayer. This puts the spotlight on Him, not our differences of opinion.
GET ACTIVE WITH YOUR GRATITUDE. Put hands and feet to your thankfulness by serving together during the holiday season. Set an extra place (or more!) at your Thanksgiving table and invite college students who can't make it home for the holiday. Bless neighbors with a meal. Volunteer together.
THINK FORWARD. Leaving a gift in your will or estate plan to Lutheran Hour Ministries and other causes close to your heart is a lasting expression of gratitude to God.
In her book, "One Thousand Gifts", author Ann Voskamp writes, "Thanksgiving is the one thing God asks to be done in everything and always... He knows what precedes the miracle." Practicing gratitude together diminishes the divisions between us. The effort is worth it.
