Paul Banks Elementary
February 2023
A Note from Mr. Campbell
Dear Paul Banks Families,
It’s hard to believe that we have already surpassed 100 days of this school year, and what a year it has been! Our 100th Day celebration was a blast with students and staff dressing up as though they were 100 years old and lessons focused on all things 100: writing about 100 years in the future, jumping for 100 seconds, building towers and other structures with 100 cups, creating 100 piece trail mix snack bags and so much more. It was such a reminder of what we seek every day: creating a joyful place for learning.
As we move into February, we will begin our annual read-a-thon challenge. As someone who has lived in Homer for nearly 20 years, I have been a witness to this annual tradition from afar, and I can’t wait to participate on an immediate day to day basis. This month-long challenge encourages students and families to immerse themselves in the beauty and power of books and stories. Please encourage your kids to read as much as possible, read to them as much as possible, and listen to as many books and stories as possible. There will be prizes throughout the challenge, and most importantly, students will grow as readers. There is nothing more exciting than that!
Our teachers and staff work every day to help students grow as readers, and our students have made great progress this year. While attending a conference in Anchorage this past weekend, I was reminded of the importance of students being at school. Though we want students to stay home if they are sick, being here is crucial. Consistent attendance is instrumental in their success as readers and learners.
Speaking of excitement, our PTA organized a fantastic fundraiser, just another example of how they are simply the best. Early reports are that they raised over $8000. I can’t thank them enough for all that they do for our students and staff. This partnership is amazing!
As always, if you have questions, concerns or feedback, don't hesitate to reach out.
Best,
Sean Campbell
