Frayne Today
News & Updates K - 12 | Term 2 Week 6 | 21/5/2024
Principal's Welcome
DEAR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, STUDENTS & STAFF
This week's edition of Frayne Today is full of many College celebrations and projects. It highlights the many facets of community that are uniquely Ursula Frayne.
On Saturday our students celebrated their sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation, a special sacrament for individuals to reaffirm their faith and commitment to Christianity, is often celebrated during Pentecost. This feast marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, heralding the inception of the Church.
Thank you to Lisa Moore, Parish Catechist, and also Sabrina Del Rosso and Daniel Gallanagh for preparing the Year 6 students for the Sacrament. Fr Nick presided over a beautiful service, marking our students' commitment to their faith. We also extend our thanks to the many staff and parents who supported our students by their attendance at this celebration.
COLLEGE ENHANCEMENTS
reFRESH FRAYNE PROJECT
The College is embarking on an enhancement project called reFRESH Frayne. The goal of this project is to ensure all learning spaces at the College are refurbished to be contemporary and well-maintained environments for learning.
The reFresh Frayne Project is now planned in draft and includes multiple phases, with Stage 1 focusing on the Admin Foyers, Stage 2 on the current Student Services area which will be refurbished into a Pastoral Care Centre. The project is aiming to be completed by end of 2025.
Capital Development Planning
Our college will begin to create a new masterplan for its Capital Development. This planning will include the significant refurbishment of learning spaces as part of the reFRESH Frayne project (Stage 14). Stage 15 will include investigating the creative development of the Rooftop Garden area which is recognised as an opportunity for development to help service some College needs.
External Areas
The Mercy Garden area is being given a makeover and new outdoor furniture trialled. All walkways will be steam cleaned and windows and glass doors cleaned in the holiday period. As a community we must create a culture where everyone takes collective responsibility to work together to ensure our buildings, grounds and spaces are well maintained, kept clean and litter free.
COLLEGE STRUCTURES
As part of our college improvement agenda we have been reviewing some key organsational structures at the College. These have included:
- Implementation of a House System Structure from Kindy to Year 12. This review is investigating the possibility of a student remaining in one house for the duration of their time at the College.
- Implementation of a six period per day timetable. This structure would replace the current seven period day structure which is now a structure that is not best suited for our student learning.
- Implementation of a Pastoral Care Structure that recognises the importance of homeroom and year group identity. In 2023 the College restructured to have Year Group Heads as the main point of reference for student pastoral care.
NEW COLLEGE BUS FLEET
Two new 39-seater buses will become the pride of our College Transport Fleet. The buses have been ordered and are expected to arrive before the end of the term.
We are also exploring ways to manage our bus fleet more effectively and considering the benefits of adding two smaller 12-seat buses to our fleet to make transport of our students safer and more efficient.
OUT OF SCHOOL CARE
The College is aiming to have everything in place for after school care to begin at the Balmoral Street campus for the start of term 3. Parents will be kept up to date on the progress.
POST SECONDARY PATHWAY REVIEW
The Consultation Draft is now open for public submissions.
The Hon. Dr. Tony Buti MLA, Minister for Education has announced the release of the Pathways to Post-School Success Expert Panel Report: Consultation Draft.
The draft is the culmination of extensive research and stakeholder engagement conducted Statewide by the Expert Panel, which includes education professionals such as Principals and assessment policy specialists.
It acknowledges the achievements of senior secondary education in Western Australia while recognising the need for improvements to ensure the system offers accessible and meaningful pathways for all students.
Accordingly, the Expert Panel has put forward 35 draft recommendations focusing on three key areas for change:
• Redefining the objectives of senior secondary education
• Developing a system based on learning goals
• Enhancing recognition of student diversity and accomplishments.
Understanding the far-reaching impact of senior secondary pathways on various stakeholders, the Expert Panel invites submissions from the broader community to ensure the Consultation Draft meets the State's needs and ambitions.
Individuals, school communities, or organisations can submit their feedback by 16 August 2024.
To review the Consultation Draft and provide feedback, please visit the Pathways to Post-School Success Review website. The Expert Panel will consider all submissions when preparing their final report, which will be presented to the Western Australian Government by 1 October 2024.

2024 CAN DRIVE
The Frayne 2024 Can Drive for Shopfront (an agency of LifeLink) was an astounding success, thanks to the incredible support from our students and staff. Collectively we managed to gather a whopping 1150 cans in total!
Our Homerooms stepped up to the challenge, with several going above and beyond to make a difference. Leading the charge was McAuley 4, massively helped by Mrs Spagnolo’s enthusiasm, to donate an impressive 136 cans! They were followed by Joachim 1, Siena 4 and Rice 2, all demonstrating commendable efforts in support of the cause. Among the Houses, McAuley collected a staggering 283 cans, with Rice not far behind with 280. McAuley students can proudly wear their House shirts for a day to commend their massive effort!
On Tuesday 14 May, Mr Bubalo, Mr Tassone, Ms Quin and McAuley Student Leaders, Tara O’Callaghan, Caitlin Crawford, Aeva Dohnt and Grace Pearson had the pleasure of delivering the cans to The Shopfront in Bentley and helped organise the cans into categorised crates. All gained a valuable insight into the charity’s operations from Shopfront Director, Damian Walsh.
Thank you to all the students who supported the 2024 Can Drive. Your generous donations have made a difference to the lives of others.

BALMORAL STREET CAMPUS PARENT FORUM
It was wonderful to see a hall full of parents and teachers sitting alongside each other, listening to our guest speaker Liz Tropiano from Behaviour Tonics at the Balmoral Street Campus Parent Forum earlier this month. Liz facilitated a very informative and practical session on ‘Understanding Child Anxiety’. Liz discussed the reality of anxiety, exploring where it may stem from and how it can be useful. Using this knowledge, we can not only teach children how to regulate themselves but reassure them that this emotional response won’t last forever.

YEAR 7 LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
On Monday 6 May, the Year 7 students participated in a Lightning Carnival and a variety of sports were on offer including, football, soccer, ultimate frisbee, netball and basketball.
Soccer Recap
Some Year 7 boys chose soccer and attended a meeting a week before the carnival to discuss team selection and tactics. On the day 29 players, 5 coaches and 2 teachers were slightly apprehensive but excited about the challenge that lay ahead. Upon arriving at Alderbury Reserve they were greeted with beautiful sunshine and a range of small-sided soccer pitches set out in a precise and organised manner. The players dialled in and focused on their warm-ups, positions and team tactics. There were 3 Frayne teams and they played 18 games in total. Right from the beginning the boys defended, passed and scored goals at a rapid pace. It was amazing to see the effort, skill and sportsmanship. At the end of the day the results included 1 draw and 17 wins. A big thank you needs to go to Alexander Vorobev, Jake Ogle, Jordan Joseph, Elias Addey and Miguel Pereira Cansado for refereeing and coaching the boys. They motivated, supported and guided the Year 7 students to achieve perfection. The mastermind of the day was Mr Pizzolante football manager. His name now sits rightly beside the likes of Klopp, Guardiola and Postecoglou. Mr P’s team selection, tactics and inspiration proved to be the masterstroke that helped to achieve greatness. Ursula Frayne Catholic College is now known as the 'Home of Football'.

JUNIOR SCHOOL INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Our Junior School students made quite a splash at the A Division Interschool Swimming Carnival! Frayne's performance was outstanding: our girls secured a commendable 4th place, while our boys clinched an impressive 1st place. Overall, we achieved a close second! What's even more commendable is the exemplary sportsmanship, encouragement, and respect displayed by our entire team throughout the day.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to one of our dedicated coaches, Tanya Culloton, for her unwavering commitment during our morning training sessions. We also extend our gratitude to all staff members who contributed to supervision and bus duty, and parent volunteers on the day, Cynthia Croft, Emma Luck, Jenny Piva, Gemma Milne and Peter Abernethy.

BALMORAL FAMILY DAY
On Thursday 9 May, the Balmoral Street Campus oval blossomed into a vibrant tapestry of picnic blankets, setting the stage for a heartwarming gathering for Family Day. The festivities commenced with a moving liturgy, echoing the spirit of UFCC's 'Year of Respect,' and offering students a platform to express gratitude to their families for their unwavering support and love. Amidst the shared moments of appreciation, students and their loved ones enjoyed a delightful picnic lunch together. Family Day epitomises the profound sense of community that thrives within the walls of Frayne, it truly was a wonderful afternoon for all.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MOTHER'S DAY LITURGY AND BREAKFAST
The Mother’s Day Liturgy and Breakfast was a wonderful celebration of faith, family, and community for our Middle School families. To paraphrase Tom Ford, “ One of the most important things which enriches our life is our connections with others creating a sense of belonging”.
The Liturgy was incredibly meaningful, with mothers, mother figures, grandmothers and students all gathering in prayer to thank God for His gift of family. The heartfelt reflections on their own experiences of motherhood given by Jasmine Collier, mother of Kayley and Landon, and Melody Miles, mother of Amberley and Matilda, resonated with many of our mothers.
The Breakfast was lovely. The food, beautifully presented by the Hospitality Team, was delicious and showcased the talents of our staff in providing restaurant quality catering. As always, the wonderful assistance received from the Friends of Frayne was greatly appreciated. I also thank the many students and staff who gave of their time to assist, which is a lovely reflection of the generosity of spirit within our community.

NATIONAL WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
On Friday 10 May, the Balmoral Street Campus participated in National Walk Safely to School Day. It is an annual event that promotes the health benefits of walking and encourages primary school children to walk to school safely. Kensington Police were present to give out stickers to all students who walked to school that day. They also visited our Kindy and Pre-Primary students in the Early Learning Centre.

DRESSDOWN TO STRESSDOWN DAY
On Wednesday 15 May the Duncan Street Campus celebrated the Annual Dressdown to Stressdown day. Students and staff donned comfortable clothes to help promote relaxation.
The event is the brainchild of the Act Belong Committee who this year decided to focus on the role that connection and belonging have on managing stress.
Students brought in their favourite teddy bears had the opportunity to share food with each other and have a Teddy Bear’s picnic on the newly purchased picnic rugs!
Staff were very grateful to be treated to the gifts and talents of students who took time to bake for a staff morning tea.

VOICES UNVEILED
On Thursday 2 May, the Drama Academy proudly presented its inaugural monologue evening, Voices Unveiled: A Night of Stories. From Year 7-12, many got to witness the transformative journey of our students as they took to the stage for the very first time.
Thank you to Mr Baker, Adam Lim, and the Chamber Strings ensemble for music to compliment the evening, and to the Arts Department for their support. Friends of Frayne also provided refreshments on the evening which was greatly appreciated. Drama Academy will have a second show in Semester 2, stay tuned!
ORGAN WORKSHOP
We had the privilege to be taught by Mr John Pound, organ teacher at Ursula Frayne Catholic College about the two new organs donated to the College. Mr Pound teaches piano at the Balmoral Street Campus and Organ at the Duncan Street Campus. He taught us about how there are different types of organs like theatrical organs and mechanical organs. He also taught us the difference between pianos and organs. One key difference is that pianos are instruments that use little hammers when a note is pressed to hit a string, and that traditional organs have air being blown into pipes instead. We all had a try at playing some simple pieces and we even had a small performance by Mr Pound.

Georgia Gerty | PPW
We are incredibly proud of Georgia and her generosity. Recently, during her street’s 'Sculpture by the Street' event—a local version of 'Sculptures by the Sea'—she organised a lemonade, cake, and dog treat sale. This event featured a verge sale over the weekend, inviting the community to explore and enjoy. Georgia raised an impressive $150, which she donated to The Haven Centre. Additionally, she contributed spare food and fresh produce from her garden to support The Haven Centre's remarkable efforts to feed those in need.
Bodhi Szigligeti | 4W & Isabella O'Hare | 5R
We have two superstar runners at Frayne! On Thursday 16 May, Bodhi and Isabella competed at the WA National Cross-Country trials.
Both did extremely well at the trials! Bodhi finished 6th out of 26 runners and Isabella finished 2nd out of 26 runners.
Bodhi has been asked to do another trial, while Isabella has qualified for the Nationals held in Melbourne later in August.
We wish both runners all the best!
