Prayer
The Fast Life
Fast from judging others;
Feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from fear of illness;
Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute;
Feast on speech that purifies.
Fast from discontent;
Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger;
Feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism;
Feast on hope.
Fast from negatives;
Feast on encouragement.
Fast from bitterness;
Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern;
Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion;
Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip;
Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm;
Feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from anxiety;
Feast on faith.
Amen
A Note from Mrs. Longden
We hear the word "culture" used in a variety of ways. At Holy Trinity, we define culture as the best of what any society has to offer - that which is true, good, and beautiful. One of our goals is to create a strong culture for our students that includes excellent literature, beautiful music, and inspiring art. We want that culture to extend to the words students use toward another and how they act. I hope that you will join us in this commitment to culture. Consider the music we listen to, the TV shows and movies we watch, or the books we read. Are they elevating us and our students with truth, goodness, and beauty? For our older students, do they need to be on social media? Unfortunately much of what happens on social media in this age group is negative talk about classmates and friends. My suggestion is that students this age don't need to be on social media (and if they tell you all their classmates are, it isn't true). If you decide to allow your students to use social media, keep in mind that it is not private, so it needs parents monitoring. Here is an article with some advice for Christian parents about social media. As the article points out so well, social media is another area where we can figure out how to put Christ first in our families and another opportunity to elevate our children with truth, goodness, and beauty.
We began the season of Lent, one of the liturgical seasons in the church calendar. For parents who would like to learn more about what Lent means to Catholics, here is some information from the Catholic bishops. One common practice during Lent is to think of something you can give up during the 40 days of Lent to prepare your heart for the coming of Easter. You can also go here for a list of more activities that you could do as a family during Lent.
Blessings,
Mrs. Longden
THEME
The Holy Spirit doesn’t fix things, He transforms things.
He transforms things so they are not even recognizable because they are done in His power and they are different than anything we would expect. So often we want God to fix things in our life, to change our current circumstances to how we want them to be. But our God is much greater than that.
We have to give Him the permission to do the transformation, but it comes out of such compassion and love for us as His children. Those of you who are parents, would you not want to give your children the best of this world and the next, to give them everything you know is true, good, and beautiful?
Just imagine how much more our Heavenly Father wants to give us all that is true, good, and beautiful, and to not just “fix” what is broken, but to transform and completely heal us!
This Lent, as you pray, fast, and give alms, remember WHY you are doing these things. Is it just out of obligation? Or is it to come closer to our Lord? Listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit. He is here, not to fix things, but to transform them into something even more beautiful.
Great to be Grateful
MARCH VIRTUE - HONESTY
HONESTY
Saint: St. Stephen
Aspiration: Come Holy Spirit, increase in me the Gift of Fear of the Lord
Meaning: Sincerity, openness, and truthfulness in one's words and actions.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, You said, "I am the Truth" (John 14:6). You have made me for Truth, because You have made me for Yourself! Help me be honest in all that I say and do, that I might know true happiness in You.
Scripture: Proverbs 12:19
Opposing Trait: Being dishonest in words and actions; telling lies.
Ways to Cultivate: Live uprightly in words and actions; recognize that "God sees the heart."
Looks Like/Sounds Like: Tell the truth even if it means you will get in trouble. "What I am saying is true." Not covering up mistakes. Telling the truth in all situations. Speak up when someone is being treated wrongly. Be aware that God knows your heart. Don't hide things from your parents or friends. Seek to live and speak the Truth even when it's hard.
Lent
Theme
This year, our Lenten theme is “Cross My Heart,” which will be observed by our elementary students. The theme for middle school students is “One Day at a Time.” Each school day during Lent, we will read scripture and pray together.
Stations of the Cross
Parents are invited to join us for Stations of the Cross, which will be prayed every Friday during Lent at 2:00 p.m.
During Lent, if we forget everything else in our relationship with God, we need to remember that we are called into an unbreakable covenant with the Divine. Whatever our destiny, we must respond to the Lord’s call.
When St. Francis was in his early twenties, he rode off to battle against the nearby city-state of Perugia. He was captured and imprisoned for a year. He returned home sick and spent the next year virtually bedridden. When he recovered from his illness, he spent time simply wandering the area, praying in abandoned chapels, walking in the woods and on slopes of Mount Subasio, spending time in caves listening first to the silence and then to the voice of God.
St. Francis was not the first saint to have encountered God during an illness. There’s something about serious illness that forces us to confront our mortality and then to question our priorities. St. Francis had longed to be a knight, a soldier, to do great deeds on the field of battle. When he lost that opportunity, he had a choice between spending the rest of his life depressed at his ill fortune or listening to the plans God had for him.
Prayer
You are our eternal life,
Great and wonderful Lord,
God Almighty,
Merciful Savior.
Amen.
