Survey Results and TVUSD's Planned Learning Models for 2020/21
Earlier this month, we issued a survey asking families for their preferred model of learning for the 2020-21 upcoming school year. The survey was intended to give families a voice as Temecula Valley Unified School District develops planning considerations for the 2020-21 school year. There were over 6,800 survey responses. The survey told us:
60.4% of our families prefer to return to a traditional school learning environment.
27.4% of our families would like a blended model option where there is a combination of on-campus and virtual at-home learning. These responses reflect short and long-term educational and health-related considerations.
12.2% of our families would like a virtual at-home learning option.
We also began the process of surveying our staff. Our initial staff survey received over 800 responses. We plan to work with our labor associations to identify additional feedback opportunities for staff.
As the Temecula Valley Unified School District plans for the upcoming 2020-21 school year, we believe that parental support, choice, and involvement is necessary for a student's optimum success in education. Additionally, we are confident that no matter the preference, the highest quality program with the most opportunities for students can be delivered here in the Temecula Valley Unified School District.
Our district’s preferred learning model aligns with the majority who have selected a traditional model and we are planning our August 12th opening with that model as our priority. We believe coming to school every day, participation in school activities, having social interactions with peers, and creating meaningful connections with teachers and staff optimizes student success, academically and social-emotionally. We intend to plan for this type of opening to the greatest extent possible.
We also acknowledge the wishes of our families and staff who have expressed health and safety concerns, a desire to continue online learning, and the unknowns of the current pandemic. We want to assure all that our primary goal has and continues to be to focus on the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff. Therefore, Temecula Valley USD is planning to offer three learning model choices: traditional, online, and blended.

TVUSD's Action Plan
With the types of learning models now determined, there is a great deal of work that needs to be accomplished for us to be ready to welcome our students on August 12. All models will be aligned with TVUSD's rigorous academic standards and will have mandated attendance and accountability structures. This will be a different experience for our students in comparison to the emergency, optional distance learning model we utilized during the last two months of school. Therefore, we need the summer to properly design the models and logistics.
The following represents our work ahead in our 6-Step Action Plan.
- Begin negotiations with labor associations
- Survey students/parents and certificated and classified staff about learning model choices
- Revise staffing allocations based on student/parent and staff responses
- Begin focus groups on each learning model option
- Begin working out the logistics of each learning model
- Continue to monitor state and local authority requirements/guidance and work with other districts
