DISTRICT NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2023
A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Decatur Township families,
Welcome to the latest edition of our monthly newsletter! October brings the transition from the first quarter to the second quarter of the academic year, and some very important upcoming dates to note. This Wednesday, October 4th, is Parent Teacher Conference day, and there will be no school for students. If you do not have a conference time set up, we encourage you to contact your child’s school before Wednesday. Conferences are an excellent opportunity for teachers and parents to partner together, helping students to reach their full potential! This teamwork is vital to our culture here in Decatur Township, as we work together preparing students to be tomorrow ready.
We are Decatur Proud to share that our DC Band & Guard are off to a great start this season! At the 2023 Bands of America competition in Louisville, they were awarded Class 2A Runner-Up, and Best Visual and Best Effect. They also became regional finalists and finished in the top 10! They followed this honor with another outstanding performance at the Noblesville Invitational with a 2nd place award. Best Wishes to the DC Band & Guard as they continue to excel!
Today, October 2nd, is School Custodian Appreciation Day! Our school custodians work hard to keep our schools clean and safe for students. THANK YOU for all you do! Also, October is National School Principals Month. We are Decatur Proud to have the BEST principals at each of our schools, and we are grateful for their leadership, supporting students and staff. Please join us in celebrating both of these vital employee groups.
You may have noticed while driving down High School Road, that construction is going on at Valley Mills Elementary School. This exciting renovation project will include a new main stairwell and office/lobby area, as well as the addition of rooms for student learning. Each classroom will be remodeled as well over the course of this project. Great job to the Viking students and staff as they make adjustments throughout the year to accommodate this facility upgrade.
Other upcoming dates to note this month include Fall Break, which begins on Monday, October 9th and extends through Friday, October 20th. Students and staff return to school on Monday, October 23rd. DCHS will host their Safe Halloween event on October 26th from 6:00-8:00 pm. See details below for this fun family community event! Also, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 7th, which will be an eLearning day. Students will complete assignments through Canvas from home to count as attendance for this day.
In closing, we wish all students, staff, and families a safe, fun, and restful fall break!
Together we are Decatur Proud!

Communities in Schools recently received a generous donation from State Farm Insurance that supported addition of new site coordinator positions in Decatur Township Schools, including a second site coordinator at Lynwood Elementary.
