Roosevelt Elementary
September 2024 Recap
2nd Grade Paul Bunyan Day
Grade 2 celebrated the completion of their “Tall Tale” unit by wearing flannel and eating flapjacks just like Paul Bunyan! Students listened to stories of the American folk heroes: Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry & Casey Jones. Some of the vocabulary words they learned were: Exaggeration, frontier, adventures, colossal, steam & energy. Stop and ask any second grader their favorite part of the unit!
4th Grade Candy Land and Chocolate Milk
During 4th grades’ CKLA unit on personal narratives, the students read about Peg Kehret who contracted polio in 1949 at the age of twelve. Kehret discussed the struggles of her journey with polio, sharing that chocolate milkshakes were the only thing that she could even keep down. In 1948, a retired schoolteacher named Eleanor Abbot, who also contracted polio, created a game called Candy Land for the sick children in the hospital to help pass the time. During our 4th grade end of unit celebration, the students shared their personal narratives, played Candy Land, and drank chocolate milk.
5th Grade Drumming
