Food & Nutrition News
Got Milk ?
March was a busy month for our department and an exciting one. We celebrated National Breakfast Week and National Nutrition Month with several activities.
1. Fun Facts about Milk/Cows was presented to NES and HPS students. The presentation focused
on how milk can help build strong bones. The presentations were followed by a Milk Mustache
contest. The students voted on the best mustache and the winners were: Mrs. Gallagher (Principal of NES) and Mrs. Naidira Seelat-Safir (Friendly Food Service Cashier at HPS).
2. We highlighted National Nutrition Month by having an ethnic dish every day during the week of
March 24th . The theme was how “Food Connects Us”. Popular items were the Polish Pierogis,
Mexican Street Corn, Italian Meatball Grinder, Mediterranean Shaker Salad and the American Hot Dog Bar.
3. We celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day with Shamrock Nuggets and a Shamrock Smoothie. 🍀
4. Local Produce is continued to be served on the menus and this month the focus was rainbow
carrots and hydroponic lettuce.
5. Students continue to embrace the free Breakfast and Lunch Option. Within the district, the 5
kitchens serve an average of 859 breakfasts/day and 2,611 lunches/day. The total number of
lunches/day grows to an average of 2,733 when teachers, staff and second meals to students
are added.
With Spring right around the corner, it’s never a bad time to start thinking about your student creating a backup of their Google data. Seniors graduating, students moving to tech school, etc. happen every year. Students can go to takeout.google.com to create a personal backup of files that they want in an easy, clickable fashion.
Once you open Takeout.google.com you can choose the data you want to backup to a personal computer, google drive, or other external storage device.
Click the deselect all option in the top right corner and then choose any piece of data that you want to back up. Typical student backups consist of items such as assignments, classroom, chrome bookmarks, drive and mail.
We do not keep student access open to Google past the start of the new school year, so we highly recommend backing up in this manner or any other manner to keep any files of work you want to keep if you are graduating and or moving to another school system or if you just want to keep an organized backup system of your many years in New Milford Public Schools.

The 2nd Annual Student v. Staff Basketball Game was held on March 12th. Once again, teams of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students signed up to take on the SMS staff. The games were officiated by a mix of student and staff officials. There was lots of chemistry on the staff team, great energy from students, and some creative calls from our student officials. It was another great evening and we can’t wait until next year!

NES News
As the weather warms up (sort of) we are beginning to feel the pull of spring. Students have enjoyed being outside more and the stuffiness of winter feels like it's making an exit, albeit slowly. Here at Northville School we have been super busy.
St. Patrick's Day was so much fun! Staff and students wore green to celebrate the day, and there were leprechaun traps set up to try to capture a few. They made a mess!
The Irish Dancers from Thorne Academy put on a performance for our students. We enjoyed the Irish Music and uplifting vibes of St. Patrick's Day!
Read Across America
On Friday, March 7th, we participated in Read Across America and had so many visitors on hand at NES from New Milford and around town to read to various classrooms. Mayor Pete Bass, Senator Stephen Harding and State Representative Bill Buckbee were among the many who read to our students. Local shop owners and a few staff members including Miss Kim and Miss Sam joined the fun.
Word Wizard Wednesday is going strong! This is an opportunity for our students to learn two new words a month. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Filogomo, our students learned the following words for March:
Cordial and Genial
Cordial means polite and friendly
Genial means nice and kind
Two books that staff shared with the students were:
A Friend Like You. Have you ever thought about what it means to be a good friend? Are you courteous? Open minded? Flexible? This book will definitely make you contemplate all the ways you can be a good friend to your classmates.
Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed. This book is about a little girl named Mary, whose kind gesture of picking blueberries for a neighbor turns into an upward spiral of good deeds. This book teaches you that you don’t have to do something BIG or EXTRAVAGANT to be cordial or genial, you just have to share your best self with those you know!
The BOE Recognizes NES Ideal Students
On March 18th the New Milford School District celebrated some students from NES for exhibiting the district ideas we live by: Focus, Heart, Collaboration and Creativity! Barbara from Mrs. Quinn-Mooney's class, Lukenson from Mrs. Pilla's class and Evelyn from Mrs. Bouzakis's class were recognized by Dr. Parlato and the Board of Education.
Alamo and Ella Visit NES ! 🐾
On March 20th, The New Milford Police brought in their K-9 unit for demonstrations and an informative, fun assembly for our littlest learners, the Excel classes. The students enjoyed meeting the two police dogs, an English Black Labrador Retriever named Alamo and an American Bloodhound named Ella.
On March 26th and 27th, our second grade students were treated to a visit from Flanders Nature Center, who presented a program called "Worms for Lunch" to align with our science curriculum. Students learned about soil composting and composition as well as plant life cycles as they relate to soil erosion and plant sciences. This information is presented as both an introduction and continuance of our participation in the Plant Patch at Northville School.
Our recycling efforts are going well! Thanks to the continued support and bag pickup from LHTC, we will have our up-cycled bench before we know it!
Happy Spring!
