Lights! Camera! Action for a Better World!
The cameras were rolling at 11 libraries this summer as 77 young people described their solutions for making the world a better place. The teens and tweens were participants in Providence Children's Film Festival film workshops during the 2017 Summer Reading Program. During the workshops, kids screened and analyzed short films, learned about film production terms and roles, expressed concerns about their world and imagined ways youth could effect change. They then formed production teams and filmed their ideas. Touching on themes as diverse as wildlife protection and healthy body image, these creative makers had plenty to say about how young people can help build a better world. Watch the PCFF compilation of those ideas in "Youth Voices: How to Build a Better World", and read the Cranston Herald's coverage of the workshop at Cranston’s Central Library. Rhode Island youth are movers and shakers, changers and makers!

Professional Growth for Youth Services Librarians
Demonstrating the professional skills and knowledge required to be a youth services librarian or youth services staff member can be difficult. Programming, outreach, and readers’ advisory for children, teens, and parents looks very different from the professional activities of other library departments and leave little time for grant writing, networking, or pursuing professional development. OLIS Youth Services Coordinator Danielle Margarida will share ways to grow your professional identity and demonstrate your value to colleagues, administrators, and patrons. We’ll also be joined by Lincoln Public Library Assistant Director Robin Nyzio, whose previous work as a children’s and teen librarian will offer a unique look at youth services through a management lens.
