30-in-30: Mr. Beach Visits Niemes Academy

This week, Board of Education President Mr. Beach stopped by Niemes Academy as he continued his journey across the District with his goal of visiting all 30 schools within 30 school weeks.

Gahr Graduate Named National Youth Poet Laureate

Former Gahr High School student Salome Agbaroji was selected as the 2023 National Youth Poet Laureate. She will serve as the United States youth literacy and civic ambassador. Her poems about family and combatting illiteracy earned her the title of Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate in 2022. She will continue her studies at Harvard University while serving as the National Youth Poet Laureate. Congratulations, Salome, we are proud of you!

Two ABCUSD Students Awarded Edison Scholarships

Congratulations to Cerritos High School student Joshua Kang and Whitney High School student Max Peng for earning scholarships from the Edison Scholars Program. This program recognizes high school seniors with a $50,000 college scholarship to help them follow their dreams in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). This year, 30 students received this prestigious award. Congratulations to Joshua and Max!

Kittens Dropped Off at Tetzlaff

Imagine - showing up to work one morning to find three “momma” cats with 14 kittens! That’s just what happened at Tetzlaff Middle School last week. The school’s staff did what they could to make the newborn kittens comfortable and safe while they searched for a home. Fortunately, a local cat rescue group, The Cat Club, was able to take the kittens, where they will be cared for while they await adoption.

ABC Adult School International Day

Students and staff from the ABC Adult School recently celebrated the many cultures and countries represented at the school with an International Day event. The event included dances and performances from countries across the globe, from Mexico to Korea and everywhere in between. Thank you to the many students and staff members who shared and celebrated their cultures.

New Textbook Under Consideration

A new textbook for this year’s summer school program will be considered by the ABCUSD Board of Education. The book is for the dual-enrollment course called CIS 103: Computer Programming and is called Programming Logic & Design: Intro published by Cengage. Those interested may learn more by visiting the District’s Curriculum & Textbook webpage.

ABCUSD Celebrates Employees

May 10, 2023, was the ABC Day of the Employee. The month of May honors many educational staff members and teachers, so ABCUSD has a tradition of celebrating all employees every May with the Day of the Employee. Celebrations were held throughout the District, including at the District Office, where employees were treated to a breakfast celebrating their commitment to serving students.

ABC EXCELS Summer Registration

The ABC EXCELS Summer Program registration is now live and available until June 2, 2023. Those interested should review the program details and complete the registration application on the ABC EXCELS Parent Portal. Thank You, Mr. Nguyen - Welcome, Dr. Zietlow

The ABCUSD Board of Education has selected Dr. Gina Zietlow to be the District’s next Superintendent. Her term will begin on Monday, May 15th. Many of you know Dr. Zietlow from her time as a teacher, assistant principal, then principal at Gahr High School before coming to the District, where she’s served as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the past seven years. As she begins her new role, we need to thank Mr. Toan Nguyen, who has served as Interim Superintendent during this school year. Mr. Nguyen, who is the District’s Deputy Superintendent/Chief Financial Officer, immersed himself in every aspect of the District during his time as Interim Superintendent, overseeing a successful school year. Thank you, Mr. Nguyen, and welcome, Dr. Zietlow!
