Woodside TK-8 October 11, 2024
What's Happening at Woodside?
We need YOU on School Site Council!
California law requires that each public school will convene a school site council which is charged with development and approval of the school's improvement plan.
Who is on a school site council?
The law defines the role of each member of the school site council. At all levels the group shall include:
- the school principal;
- teacher representatives elected by fellow teachers;
- other school staff elected by their peers;
- parents of students currently attending the school and selected by other parents
We are currently in need of 2 PARENTS to join us on our SSC team! There are 6 meetings scheduled for this year: Monday afternoons at 3:30 in Art Room/Design Lab or on Zoom, if needed. This is the perfect chance to learn more about our school programs, how our school budgets, organizes, and offers these programs!
If you are interested or you'd like to nominate another amazing parent, please submit the name to debra.johnston@sanjuan.edu by Wed. October 16th!

Great Shakeout 2024
Woodside Cougars will join millions of other citizens around the world for ShakeOut Day on October 17! We will participate in an earthquake drill at 10:17 a.m. on 10/17 to practice earthquake safety.
While some areas of California are more likely to have earthquakes than others, all of California is at higher risk compared to the rest of the country. You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, at school, or even on vacation.
What we do now will determine our quality of life after our next big earthquake. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly?
The Great California ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: "Drop, Cover and Hold On." The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to secure your space in order to prevent damage and injuries. ShakeOut is also a reminder for Californians to be prepared financially, such as by exploring earthquake insurance. The not-for-profit California Earthquake Authority offers earthquake insurance throughout California for homeowners, renters, mobilehome owners and condo-unit owners.
Red Ribbon/Bully Prevention Week is Coming! Oct. 28-Nov. 1
Be Drug Free and Let Kindness Rule!
Red Ribbon and Bully Prevention Week is an annual motivator to show intolerance for drugs in our communities. Each year during the end of October, more than 80 million young people and adults show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying a red ribbon. Many schools also take time to show spirit towards these goals, making the student voice celebratory! Our theme this year is Be Drug Free and Let Kindness Rule! Our Peer Mentor group has worked hard to organize this fun week and show their leadership skills!
Join us for the following Spirit Days:
Mon. Oct. 28: School Opposite Day - dress like your teacher!
Tues. Oct. 29: Use your head and don't do drugs - wear a hat!
Wed. Oct. 30: Keep your future BRIGHT - wear neon and bright colors!
Thurs. Oct. 31: Character Day - dress as your favorite book character!
Fri. Nov. 1: Red Ribbon Day - wear red!

Innovative School: Design Updates
Our innovative school model at Woodside uses a design thinking approach created by the d. School at Stanford University. This approach is an example of human centered design where we are working to get our students and community more involved in the learning that happens here at Woodside.
Part of this design thinking approach involves the creation of prototypes. Below are some exciting prototypes currently happening across the campus.
Using a light table to improve academic skills and student engagement (TK)
Using hydroponic growing systems and other types of planting spaces to compare growth rates (2nd)
Creating calm classroom environments where students feel connected and increase self-regulation strategies (4th)
Teaching students to reduce their carbon footprint and connect with our outdoor garden space (5th)
Using Legos to support student learning of basic engineering principles (middle school elective)
Reach out and ask your child’s classroom teacher what prototype they are currently designing!

If you would like to connect with me, share a bit of your story, or ask questions about the design work taking place at Woodside, I’d love to chat! Email me at dvictor@sanjuan.edu
