NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 20
PPS schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Have a wonderful long weekend and we will see you Tuesday!
INDIAN EDUCATION FLAGS INSTALLED AT ATKINSON
Each PPS K–5, K–8, and middle school has recently received flags representing the nine tribal nations of Oregon. These flags are a gift from the PPS Indian Education program to our school community, with a meaningful purpose behind them. In conversations with the community last year, many families expressed that displaying these flags would be a powerful and simple way to show that Native American students and families are recognized and valued in their school environment. Each flag is accompanied by a QR code for each tribal website so we can learn more about each tribe. They are now hanging in our main hallway — check them out!
IMMUNIZATION EXCLUSION DEADLINE APPROACHING — FEBRUARY 19
Reminder that the deadline for submitting required vaccination documentation is February 19, 2025. Oregon law requires proof of immunization records in order for students to attend school. If students are not up to date on their records by February 19, they may not be able to attend school until we receive current and updated records.
Parents can access their record through their PCP or: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/PREVENTIONWELLNESS/VACCINESIMMUNIZATION/GETTINGIMMUNIZED/Pages/ImmRecords.aspx
UPCOMING DRILLS
All schools are required to instruct and drill students on emergency procedures so that the students can respond to an emergency without confusion or panic. In the coming weeks, we will be conducting the following drills at Atkinson:
- Tuesday, February 4: Fire/Evacuation Drill
Read more about these drills on the PPS website HERE.

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
Our Lunar New Year celebration will be on Friday, January 31 from 6:30–8 p.m. in the cafeteria. Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities, among others. The festival celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. It is a time to honor our ancestors and spend time with loved ones. Guests are invited to wear red, yellow, gold, or traditional clothing.
There will be:
- 🍚 Vietnamese food from local restaurants: Banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), spring rolls, egg rolls, stir fry noodles, and sweet sticky rice.
- 🦁 A special lion dance performance from White Lotus.
- 🌸 Tons of Lunar New Year arts and crafts (snake finger puppets, Chinese lanterns, cherry blossom tree art).
- 📖 Free AAPI related children's books from Multnomah County Library and SMART reading.
- 🧧 "Pick your own Red Envelope" raffle with prizes from Fly by Jing, Hopscotch, Lan Su Chinese Garden, Portland Nursery, Good Coffee, among many others.
- 🏮Light up the night with lanterns for purchase (pre-sale and day of event).
