A Message from Benson's Bowling Coach Jacob Patterson
Dear Benson Tech Community,
Benson Tech Bowlers had an amazing performance at the 2025 District Tournament, but finish in 4th place, just shy of winning hardware, scholarships and qualifying for the State tournament.
This year, Benson Tech had one team competing in the District Bowling Tournament held at Mt. Hood Lanes in Gresham on Sunday January 26th. All teams bowl 20 games in the qualifying round. The top six teams with highest total score advance to the Finals round and bowl another 10 games. Then the top three teams advance to a step-ladder playoff for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The top three teams also advance to the State Championship tournament. High School bowling is “baker format” meaning five bowlers roll a single together. The first bowler rolls frames 1 and 6, the second bowler rolls frames 2 and 7, and so on until the fifth bowler rolls frames 5 and 10 to finish the game.
It took Benson a 123 warm up game to find their stride, then rolled a very nice 192, 152, 163, and a 170 for a very solid start. The next five games saw some struggles and not as high of scores as hoped going 139, 120, 147, 125, and 149. Benson bounced back with another solid five games rolling 145, 179, 148, 153, and 160. Right before the lunch break and after three and a half hours of nonstop bowling, Benson saw its worst games of the day, finishing the 20 game qualifying round with 136, 96, 101, 114, and 137. But Benson got the job done taking 6th place, making the cut to the final round after the lunch break.
The six top teams bowled another 10 games in the finals round. Benson had a good first game in the finals rolling 165 and followed it up with a 156. Sitting in third place, Benson threw three rough games in the next four going 128, 128, 161, and 126. Benson fell to 5th place and knew they needed to catch fire in the last four games if they wanted any chance. The team did amazing and rolled their three highest games in the final round to rally a comeback, but it just wasn’t enough. The 144, 181, 185, and 172 saw Benson finishing in 4th place. Missing 3rd place by just 280 pins, and missing 1st place by 408 pins. The top three teams at Districts receive award trophies, scholarship money, and advance to the State Tournament.
We are so proud of our bowlers and how they did! We can’t thank them enough for all the time and effort they’ve put into this season and the Bowling Club. Dane deBlock, Nate Baldwin, Connor Jacobsen, Kaleb Pate, River Hansen, Caleb Butler, Ian Probst, and Nick Probst! Many thanks to all the parents, families, siblings, and supporters who came out to support the Benson Bowlers. A huge thank you to Principal Wilson for coming to cheer on Benson Tech, and big credit to KBPS Majors, Benson Orbit & Yearbook Reporters Nick and Eli who made the trip out to cover the event. One of the biggest thank you’s to BPHS Bowling Coach and Alum Sean Philipsen for donating all of his time and help to our students at the tournament and at practice every week. We owe many many thanks to Eric, Phil and the team at KingPins Portland for providing Benson students the opportunity to bowl and learn the sport, improving their skills, making friends and having fun. Thanks to everyone who has bowled with us this year and has supported us. We look forward to bowling next year at Benson!
Best,
Jacob Patterson - Benson Bowling Club Advisor

The College & Career team will be in Mr. Guth's classes on Wednesday, January 29, and Thursday, January 30, to help seniors with their plans after high school.
We will work on FAFSA/ORSAA (money for college or trade schools), Oregon Promise, Portland Community College application, and OSAC (one application for 100s of scholarships to college/trades/and more).

Interested in Playing Boys Volleyball?
Benson would like to offer boys volleyball if there is enough interest. Since this is an emerging OSAA sport, the deadline to register is earlier than other spring sports. We need to register the team with the state by February 3rd. For this reason, please register for boys volleyball by Thursday, 1/30, so we know if we have enough interest to form a team. Use this link to register.
Sign Up for Spring Sports!
Spring sports registration is open! Use this link to register by February 25 to ensure your athlete is cleared to play on the first day of the season (March 3). While many athletes who register after February 25 may still participate in the season, they likely will not be cleared to participate on the first day. Athletes may not participate until they are cleared (registered with a valid physical exam form uploaded to their account). If there is enough interest in softball, baseball, tennis, golf, or volleyball, coaches may need to make cuts or close registration. All sports registration will close no later than March 21, so any athletes who are not cleared by that date will not be allowed to play that season. Bottom line: register NOW & get cleared before the deadline if you want to play a sport this spring! Below are the spring sports Benson offers.
- Track & Field
- Softball
- Baseball
- Tennis
- Golf
- Boys Volleyball (registration deadline is 1/30!)
New Athlete Registration Platform
You've likely seen the emails from PPS announcing that the district is switching to a new online registration platform starting this month called Play On Sports. The district recommends that families download a copy of your athlete's most recent physical exam form from the old system (ArbiterSports) so you're able to easily upload it to the new system.
Go Astros!

A Message from Benson's Vice Principal Joe Mitacek: Parking at Benson Tech
Dear Benson Tech Families,
One of our neighbors, Concorde Career College, north of our campus on Irving street has begun towing cars not labeled with their parking permits. It has come to our attention that people in the Benson Tech community have been using their parking lot. Please DO NOT use their parking lot when visiting our campus; getting towed results in $350 in fines. This has especially been problematic during evening events. Please be aware of parking signage when visiting Benson Tech and remember that our school district is not responsible for parking fines.

STUDENT ACTIVITY FUND LINK Families who are able are asked to contribute funds to school-wide projects, classes and programs each year. The school operational budget does not cover all the needs of our students, classrooms, programs, activities, and building/equipment improvements. We rely on voluntary contributions from families to enhance the overall experience for our students. As the school year progresses, we will highlight needs as they arise for teachers and student groups. Individual teams and teachers may be sharing information as well. If you are able to contribute a suggested $25, or whatever you can afford, to our Student Activity Fund, these dollars will help fund school-wide activities for all students. Thank you.
