Study Update
We finished up our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Study last week. The students had fun reusing all kinds of materials, sorting recyclables, and learning about taking care of the earth.
We’ve begun our last study of the school year, the Insects Study. We will be working to answer the following questions:
- What are the characteristics of insects?
- Where do insects live? How do they live?
- What insects are in our community?
- How do insects change?
- Who works with insects?
- How do insects help the earth?
We have lots of great new insect books to read and look at together. We’ll be searching for insects outside and observing and examining them! We even have butterfly gardens in each classroom so children will get to observe the life cycle of a butterfly up close. Ask your child about the caterpillars in their classroom! We will look at some other bugs and spiders that are not insects, and we’ll see how they are different from insects. We hope this study will foster curiosity and will be a great opportunity for exploration. If you or a family member has a job or hobby related to insects that you could share, please let us know!

A Note From Our Preschool Specialist
Summer Playing and Learning Ideas
- Read books! You cannot read too much. Read favorite books at home and visit the library with your child to choose some new books together. Sign up for a summer reading program.
- Spend time outside. Explore and observe the weather, plants, flowers, birds, and more. Talk about what you see and ask your child questions about what s/he notices around you. Take books outside and read on a blanket.
- Provide materials like crayons, watercolors, or chalk for your child to create artwork. Ask your child to tell you about their artwork. Practice name writing.
- Attend free events like farmers markets, parades, concerts, or story times. Before you go, talk with your child about where you are going and what you might see or hear when you are there. Afterward, ask your child what they liked or didn’t like about the experience.
- Prepare food together. Make a fruit salad or a simple snack with your child.
- Play with water or bubbles. Have your child help wash a bike or car.
- Write together. Write a note or card to a friend or family member. Have your child help write the note or sign his or her name. Make a grocery list or a list of what you will do today.
- Use math every day. Examples: Count out four strawberries and 10 blueberries to eat. If you have four goldfish and I give you one more, how many will you have? Sort laundry - by item, by size, by color. Draw shapes and practice naming them. Point out numbers when you see them on houses or mailboxes.
- Play with your child. Pretend. Be silly. Have fun!
