The Texan Star September 5th
Prairie Trail Elementary School Newsletter
A Message from Principal Wendi Vaughn
I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Labor Day weekend. I enjoyed watching my son play in his first college football game for Tulsa University. I am a very proud momma.
Lunch visitors started today! In order to eat lunch with your child, be sure to arrive at least 5-10 minutes before their schedule lunch time so you can park and get a visitors badge. The school schedule is linked on every newsletter at the bottom of the page. Everyone must have a state issued identification card or a passport to sign-in. Some days are busier than others, so plan ahead and be here on time. We love to have you visit for lunch, but we recommend you limit your visits to no more than once a week. Lunch time is valuable time for students to learn communication skills in an unstructured environment with peers. We also ask that when you do come, try out some of our conversation starters and put the electronics away. Can't wait to see you at Café PTE!
We live in a time where information is at our finger tips almost immediately. With that there seems to be a growing expectation for immediate responses from teachers regarding emails sent outside of school hours, including weekends. While I understand the importance of communication between parents and teachers, it is crucial to respect their personal time.
Teachers dedicate countless hours to planning lessons, grading assignments, and ensuring the success of every student in their care. They deserve the opportunity to unwind and spend quality time with their families outside of school hours. By allowing them 24 hours to respond to emails sent during weekdays, we can strike a balance between effective communication and respecting their personal lives.
Moreover, it is essential for parents to understand that weekends are not considered working days for teachers. Just as you value your own time off from work, so do they. Expecting immediate responses during these times can lead to burnout and negatively impact teacher morale.
By giving our teachers the space they need during evenings and weekends, we are fostering an environment that promotes their well-being while also allowing them to be fully present in the classroom during school hours. This will undoubtedly have a positive impact on your child's education.
Thank you for respecting our teachers' personal time by allowing 24 hours for a response to emails sent during weekdays. Let us work together in creating an atmosphere that values work-life balance for our dedicated educators.
Sincerely,
Wendi Vaughn
Principal

Service Saturday - NEW DATE!
SERVICE SATURDAY: Saturday, September 23rd; 8:00 - 10:00am (CHANGE IN DATE)
Join us for our first Service Saturday of the year! EVERYONE is welcome, but 4th and 5th grade families are especially encouraged to attend this one! This is a great opportunity to come together and show the kiddos how we can all give back to our Prairie Trail community!
We’ll be meeting in the covered pavilion in the courtyard behind the school. Feel free to bring rakes, work gloves & anything else you think may be useful as we work to clean up the school yard and make it a safe, beautiful space for all our students and community members. See you there!
SPIRIT NIGHT AT AWESOME TIMES
SPIRIT NIGHT AT AWESOME TIMES: Tuesday, September 12th; 11am - 9pm
Grab the whole family and head on over to Awesome Times for a yummy lunch or a delicious dinner (or both!) benefitting the 5th grade! Mention Prairie Trail and 15% of all proceeds will go directly towards the 5th grade field trip.
Haven’t been to Awesome Times yet? Prairie Trail families give it 5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommend. So check out this Prairie Trail favorite and give your favorite 5th grade classes a boost at the same time!
FIFTH GRADE GIVES BACK
Fifth Grade! This is your time to shine! Each month we’re asking one or two grades to be good citizens and give back to the Prairie Trail community. This month we’re asking 5th grade to help.
What can you do? There are 3 different ways you can help your Prairie Trail community this month:
1) Snack Drive: September 4th - 8th. Help us restock the snack pantry by bringing in snacks like individually wrapped bags of pretzels, goldfish, applesauce pouches, nutrigrain bars, nut-free granola bars or raisins/craisins. You can also shop directly from the snack wishlist at https://tinyurl.com/snack5th and select “Prairie Trail Elementary” to have it shipped directly
2) Service Saturday: September 23rd, 8am-10am. (This is a CHANGE IN THE DATE that we previously communicated). Join other 4th and 5th grade families for the first Service Saturday of the year!
3) Spirit Night at Awesome Times: Tuesday, September 12th; 11am - 9pm. This one directly benefits YOU! 15% of all proceeds go towards the 5th grade field trip at the end of the year.
PTA MEMBERSHIP CONTEST
Only 4 weeks left in our EPIC PTA membership showdown with Timber Creek Elementary and we’re currently in the lead…but our lead is slipping!
❓Did you know❓Joining the PTA does NOT mean you have to volunteer. 😊 Your PTA membership helps our entire school community and it doesn’t come with any obligations. :) In fact, a membership comes with a LOT of DISCOUNTS AND PERKS. (Click here for more info).
Want to know more about what we do & how we use your membership fees at Prairie Trail? Click HERE for more information.
❓Did you know❓ Moms, DADs, kids, grandparents, and even friends and community members can join the PTA? The school with the highest % of members wins, so if only one person in your family has joined the PTA, why not add a second, third, fourth, or more?
If we triumph, their principal wears our spirit shirt for the day! Plus, a PJ day for the WHOLE school! We’ll also have prizes for the🏆🏆 top class from each grade and their teachers.🏆🏆
Memberships are on sale now, click HERE to join online! Let's make PTE proud! Spread the word, invite friends, and let's win this together!

Tardies
The tardy bell rings at 7:45 am. Your child needs to be in their classroom, in their seat at 7:45 am in order to be counted on time.
Cutting down on tardies is a goal. We have some fun incentives for the students who are getting here on time everyday. We also have some consequences for students and families who are struggling in this area.
We are sending warning emails and phone calls to families with 3 and 4 tardies. After the 5th tardy, parents will be asked to attend an Attendance Matters parent meeting.
After the 6th tardy, parents will start signing their child(ren) in every morning between 7:15-7:30 am for 21 days. It takes 21 days to break a habit and make a new one.
We want to work with you to ensure that your child does not lose credit because of excessive tardies. Our school nurse, counselor, attendance clerk, teachers, and administrators will work with you as necessary to address specific needs and family situations.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this letter or your child’s attendance, please call Monica Saucedo, Attendance Clerk, for assistance at 469-713-5980 or email her at saucedomonica@lisd.net.
Attendance/Absences/Illnesses
There are no longer pre-arranged absences in LISD. After the absence, you will need to be sure to send a parent note.
Each child can be absent up to 10 times with parent and/or doctor's notes. It is NOT recommended that you use all 10. Children do better in school when they are at school.
We are already seeing an uptick with students with fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. There are no additional protocols for COVID any more. We are to treat it like any other illness.
What does that mean?
Students must be fever free, vomit free, and diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school with improving symptoms regardless of what the illness is.
