FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
It was such an incredible pleasure to see the colors, smiles, pride, and enthusiasm at our first ever Hispanic Heritage Cultural Table Exhibit. In the past, we had one table set up with a few things from one culture in the library, but this year, after a parent asked if they could set up a more elaborate display, we decided to have one big event to highlight all of the hispanic heritage cultures at our school at once. Our parents of Hispanic Heritage responded "con ganas" and La Placita become a tapestry of music, color, culture, laughter, education, and joy.
Valuing the diversity and richness of our community is a priority and we want to make sure that our students know that there are a variety of countries that have hispanic heritage. In addition to these parent displays, each classroom is studying a country that speaks Spanish and is making a visual display for other students to see. The entire school will participate in a Gallery Walk to view each classroom's display this Wednesday. We will have 22 Spanish Speaking countries/territories on display!
We will leave the displays up during Parent-Teacher Conferences, so you will get to enjoy them as well.
If you are of Hispanic Heritage and didn't get to participate in our parent table display, or if you are of another heritage, don't worry, we are planning a big Multicultural Festival for the entire community in May. All of the wonderful cultures that make up our school will be on display, with food, performances, and it will be open to everyone!
I am looking forward to continuing to collaborate to celebrate the richness of our community!
With gratitude,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Wednesday Parent Meetings - PTA Meeting
Each Wednesday, from 8:30-10:00 am, we have parent meetings in the Library. All parents are invited. Meetings are bilingual and there is a Zoom option at this link (although in person attendance is recommended).
This week we will be hosting our monthly PTA Meeting. We will have a few special guests at this meeting to talk about Bond Measure QS. This is a bond that will provide funding for Santa Monica school facilities.
The Great Shakeout - October 17
We will be participating in the statewide Great Shakeout this Thursday, 10/17 at 10:17 am. This is an opportunity for us to practice a full blown earthquake drill to ensure that we are prepared. Here is what will happen:
Announcement - The principal will initiate the drill with an announcemnt
Drop, Cover, Hold - All students and staff will drop, cover and hold wherever they are
Evacuate - We will all evacuate to the middle of the grass (with emergency supplies)
Account for all students and staff - We will make sure everyone is present and call into the district to let them know our status
Engage Response Teams - Each staff member is part of an emergency response team. We will go to our teams and make sure we know what to do, have all the supplies we need, and we will enact a few scenarios to make sure we know how to respond.
End - Staff and students will provide feedback so that we can do even better next time.
You can support your child by letting them know that you heard we are practicing for an earthquake and how great it is to practice so you know what to do. It is mostly for the adults to practice. All students need to do is follow the directions of their teachers, we will take care of the rest.
As a famliy, this is a good opportunity to ensure that you are prepared for an earthquake as well. You can find out more about the Great Shakeout and how to prepare yourself for an earthquake here.
